Marcus stepped forward, placing a calm, steady hand on General Sterling’s shoulder. “Easy, General. Let it go. They got the message.” The general took a deep, shuddering breath, his rigid posture relaxing fractionally as he looked at Marcus with profound respect. He turned back to the trembling officers. “Get back in your cruiser, clear this scene, and write your report accurately. Dismissed.” Without another word, Henderson and his rookie partner practically sprinted back to their patrol car, threw it into reverse, and tore down Elmwood Circle with tires screeching, eager to escape the terrifying wrath of a four-star general. As the red and blue lights vanished into the distance, General Sterling turned to Marcus, offering a small, wry smile. “Well, Sergeant, it looks like your lawn is nearly finished. Care to invite your old commander inside for a cup of black coffee?” Marcus laughed, the last remnants of the afternoon’s bitterness melting away into the crisp autumn air. “Yes, sir,” Marcus replied, turning off the weed trimmer for good. “Let’s go inside.” And together, the two veterans walked up the driveway and into the house, leaving the quiet, humbled neighborhood behind them as the sun dipped slowly below the horizon.
