The silence that followed was brief, but it moved through the room like a physical thing.
Margaret’s smile vanished.
Her hand went toward the crystal glass and stopped an inch short of it.
Adrian’s face did not change immediately. He blinked, waiting for the statement to become a joke, a bluff, or one of the careful administrative phrases he often accused Claire of using when she wanted to avoid an argument.
Nicole’s voice came clearly through the phone. “Confirmed. The estate remains solely under your authority.”
A muted electronic chime sounded somewhere in the hallway as the access system updated.
Adrian stepped into Claire’s view. He kept a clear distance, though one hand rose between them, palm open.
“Claire, wait.” His voice had lost its practiced smoothness. “What did you just do?”
Claire looked directly at him. For a moment she saw the man who used to sleep with one foot outside the blanket, who could never remember where he had put his reading glasses, who once drove forty miles at midnight because she mentioned missing a lemon pie from a diner near her college. Then she saw the man who had planned where she would stand while he dropped her contract at her feet.
