He took a slow, measured step forward, the leather of his dress shoes clicking faintly against the linoleum. The pacing of his movement was deliberate—a slow build of tension as he navigated the sea of desks. He wasn't trying to hide, but he wasn't announcing himself either. He wanted to see the precinct in its natural, unfiltered state. He wanted to observe the actors before the director called for action.

Officer Thomas Vance was not a man who appreciated subtlety. Vane was a veteran of the precinct, a hulking figure with a thick neck, a rigid buzz cut, and a uniform that strained across his broad chest. His solid black uniform was crisp, the silver badge on his chest polished to a reflective sheen. Vance operated on a binary view of the world, fueled by a high-key arrogance and a sense of absolute authority within the four walls of the station.

Vance was leaning against a filing cabinet, holding court with two rookie officers, when his eyes locked onto the splash of burgundy moving through the periphery of his vision. The camera of Vance’s attention snapped into a sharp, narrow focus. He saw a Black man in a high-end suit walking through his territory with an air of unearned confidence. In Vance’s prejudiced mind, the visual didn't compute. It clashed with the established visual continuity of his daily reality. The cognitive dissonance immediately morphed into hostility.

"Excuse me," Vance muttered to the rookies, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register. He pushed off the cabinet, his heavy boots thudding against the floor.

Marcus sensed the shift in the room's energy before he even turned his head. It was like a sudden shift in editing pace—the slow, ambient rhythm of the bullpen suddenly accelerating into a series of rapid, aggressive cuts. He felt the heavy gaze tracking him, the kinetic energy of someone moving with malicious intent closing the distance.
