“Sir…”
Mallory remained silent.
Natalie continued.
“I was sworn into office last month.”
Cole's expression changed.
He remembered the department briefing.
The photograph.
The name.
The announcement that the district had a new United States Attorney.
Natalie Whitaker.
He looked at her sweatshirt.
Then at her face.
Then at Mallory.
“Derek,” he whispered.
Mallory snapped at him.
“What?”
“I think she might be telling the truth.”
Mallory's confidence weakened.
But pride is sometimes stronger than common sense.
He stared at Natalie.
“If you're really the U.S. Attorney, you'll understand why we responded.”
“I understand why you responded.”
She paused.
“I don't understand why you stopped thinking after you arrived.”
That sentence landed harder than an accusation.
Mallory slowly lowered the handcuffs.
Natalie noticed.
So did Cole.
“Call your supervisor,” she said.
Cole reached for his radio.
“Dispatch, this is Unit Four Bravo. Requesting Captain Keller to Oakleaf Drive.”
The dispatcher responded immediately.
“Copy. Captain Keller is en route.”
Natalie picked up her coffee.
Then she sat down.
“I'll wait.”
Mallory remained standing.
For the first time that morning, he looked uncertain.
Five minutes can feel like nothing.
But when a person's confidence is collapsing, five minutes can feel like an hour.
Mallory stood beside the cruiser.
Cole remained several feet away.
Natalie sat on her porch.
She did not threaten anyone.
She did not shout.
She simply waited.
Across the street, Carol Hastings watched nervously.
The story she had imagined was changing.
She had expected the police to remove an intruder.
Instead, the woman on the porch appeared completely calm.
Carol's neighbor leaned toward her.
“Do you know who she is?”
“No.”
“Then why did you call?”
Carol frowned.
“I thought she was breaking in.”
“But she was drinking coffee.”
Carol had no answer.
A black SUV appeared at the end of the street.
It turned toward them.
Captain David Keller stepped out.
He had been with the department for more than two decades.
He recognized Natalie immediately.
He had attended her swearing-in ceremony.
His expression changed the moment he saw Mallory standing near the porch.
“Officer Mallory.”
Mallory straightened.
“Captain.”
Keller looked at Natalie.
Then at the handcuffs still hanging from Mallory's belt.
Then at the house.
“What happened?”
Mallory began explaining.
“Captain, we received a call about a suspicious woman—”
Keller held up his hand.
“Where is the suspicious woman?”
Mallory pointed.
Keller looked at Natalie.
She gave him a polite nod.
He immediately removed his cap.
“Madam U.S. Attorney.”
Mallory's face went pale.
Cole closed his eyes.
Carol Hastings stopped breathing for a moment.
Keller walked toward the porch.
“Ms. Whitaker, I apologize.”
Natalie stood.
“Captain Keller.”
“I understand this is an extremely serious situation.”
“It is.”
Keller turned toward Mallory.
“Step away from the property.”
Mallory hesitated.
“Captain…”
“Now.”
Mallory obeyed.
Cole followed.
Natalie watched them move back toward the street.
Then she turned toward Keller.
“I want to know what happened.”
“You have every right to ask.”
“No,” Natalie replied.
Her voice remained quiet.
“I want to know why it happened.”
Keller looked uncomfortable.
“Dispatch received a report of a suspicious individual.”
“From whom?”
Keller hesitated.
“Mrs. Carol Hastings.”
Natalie looked toward Carol's house.
“Play the call.”
Keller blinked.
“Ma'am?”
“The recording.”
Keller nodded.
He contacted dispatch.
Within minutes, the audio file was available.
He pressed play.
Carol's voice came through the phone speaker.
“There is a woman at the new house. She doesn't look like she belongs there. She's acting suspiciously. I think she may be trying to get inside.”
Natalie listened.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Natalie turned toward Keller.
“She didn't report a burglary.”
“No.”
“She reported that I looked suspicious.”
“Yes.”
“And your officers treated that statement as if it were evidence.”
Keller looked down.
“That appears to be what happened.”
Natalie nodded slowly.
“This is exactly how dangerous encounters begin.”
Keller said nothing.
She continued.
