For a moment, there was absolute silence on the street. The dust settled around the massive black vehicle.

Briggs dropped Elara’s wrist completely, his hand moving instinctively toward the service weapon holstered at his hip. "What the hell is this?" he muttered. Kowalski had already drawn his taser, his hands shaking violently as he aimed it at the tinted windows of the SUV.

"Hey!" Briggs yelled, puffing his chest out again, trying to regain the control he had just lost. "Move that vehicle right now! This is an active police scene!"

The SUV did not move. The engine rumbled with a low, menacing hum.

The heavy metallic clack of all four SUV doors unlocking simultaneously echoed like a gunshot.

Before Briggs could shout another command, the doors swung open in perfect synchronization. Out stepped four men and one woman. They were not local cops. They were dressed in immaculate, tailored dark suits, with discrete earpieces coiling down their necks. They moved with a terrifying, coordinated efficiency that spoke of top-tier military or federal training.

They didn't just step out of the car; they deployed. Within three seconds, two of the agents had flanked the police cruiser, while the other three marched with unyielding purpose straight up Elara’s walkway.

The lead agent, a tall, broad-shouldered man with a severe buzz cut and piercing gray eyes, didn't even look at Briggs. His eyes were locked on Elara, assessing her for injuries.

"Federal Agents! Hands off your weapons and step away from the homeowner!" the lead agent barked, his voice carrying the absolute, uncompromising authority of a man who gave orders to generals.

Briggs, his hand still hovering over his gun, hesitated. "Who the hell are you? I'm in the middle of an arrest here!"

The lead agent reached into his breast pocket and produced a gold shield, flipping it open so fast it caught the afternoon sun. "Special Agent Thorne, Federal Bureau of Investigation. And you, Officer, are about five seconds away from a federal indictment. Step away from her. Now."

The word "Federal" hit Briggs like a physical blow. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly and pale. Kowalski, displaying the only common sense he had shown all day, immediately holstered his taser and took three large steps back, putting his hands in the air to show he was not a threat.

"I... we got a call," Briggs stammered, stepping back from Elara, his previous arrogance entirely evaporated. "A suspicious person. She was uncooperative. She wouldn't show ID."

Agent Thorne stepped onto the porch, physically inserting his large frame between Briggs and Elara. He didn't look at the police officer. He turned entirely to Elara, his posture shifting from aggressive combatant to respectful subordinate.

"Are you injured, Ma'am?" Thorne asked, his voice low and professional.
