Mia looked down.

Jack's voice softened.

"Your father didn't send you here because he wanted you to join a motorcycle club."

He paused.

"He sent you here because he trusted us."

Jack took the metal box.

"And if Daniel Carter trusted us with his daughter, then Reaper's Hollow will keep its word."

Outside, thunder rolled across the highway.

And somewhere beyond the rain, a black SUV waited with its headlights off.

Victor Hale sat behind the wheel.

He watched the Rusty Nail.

And he smiled.

Because he knew something Jack Mercer didn't.

Mia Carter hadn't brought the most dangerous thing into the clubhouse.

She was the most dangerous thing in the room.

Because Daniel Carter had spent three years preparing his daughter for the day when the truth would finally come looking for her.

The Man Who Disappeared

The next morning, Jack took Mia to the old Reaper's Hollow garage.

It stood five miles outside town.

A massive steel building surrounded by pine trees and abandoned farm fields.

The place had once been a mechanic's workshop.

Now it served as the club's headquarters.

Inside were motorcycles.

Dozens of them.

Some restored.

Some half-built.

Some covered in tarps.

The smell of oil and metal filled the air.

Mia walked slowly between them.

She had grown up around motorcycles.

Her father had taught her how to change oil before she could drive.

He had taught her how to listen to an engine.

"Machines tell you what's wrong," he used to say.

"You just have to stop shouting long enough to hear them."

Mia touched the handlebar of an old Harley.

Jack watched.

"That's Daniel's."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"The motorcycle."

Mia stared at it.

Black paint.

Chrome pipes.

A dent near the fuel tank.

She recognized it instantly.

"My father's."

Jack nodded.

"He left it here."

"Why?"

"Because he knew he might not come back."

Mia looked at the motorcycle.

"He knew."

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Three months before he disappeared."

She swallowed.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Jack didn't answer.

Mia turned toward him.

"You keep saying you wanted to protect me."

"I did."

"You protected me by letting me think he abandoned me."

Jack looked down.

"I thought the less you knew, the safer you'd be."

"It wasn't safer."

"No."

"Nothing about this was safer."

Jack nodded.

"You're right."

Mia walked toward the workbench.

There were tools arranged neatly across it.

She recognized Daniel's old wrench.

She picked it up.

"He used this."

Jack nodded.

"Every day."

Mia ran her thumb over the worn handle.

Then she noticed something carved into the wood.

A tiny letter.

M.

She frowned.

"What's this?"

Jack looked.

His face changed.

"I don't know."

Mia turned the handle.

There were more marks.

Letters.

Numbers.

Coordinates.

Jack took the wrench.

He stared at the markings.

"That's not random."

"What is it?"

"Code."

Mia looked at him.

"You know how to read it?"

"Not yet."

Frank Doyle entered the garage.

"Boss."

Jack looked over.

"What?"

"We've got a problem."

"Victor?"

Frank shook his head.

"Worse."

He handed Jack a photograph.

Jack studied it.

A warehouse.

Burned.

Several police vehicles.

A body bag.

Mia stepped closer.

"What is that?"

Jack didn't answer.

Frank did.

"Your father's truck."

Mia froze.

"Where?"

"Two hours west."

"Was there a body?"

"No."

Mia exhaled.

Jack looked at Frank.

"Who sent this?"

"Anonymous."

Jack studied the photograph.

Then he saw something.

In the lower corner was a symbol.

A silver triangle.

He recognized it.

"So do I," he whispered.

Mia looked at him.

"What?"

Jack handed the picture to her.

"The people your father was investigating."

She stared at the symbol.

"What does it mean?"

"Black Meridian."

Mia frowned.

"Is that a company?"

"Officially."

"And unofficially?"

Jack's expression darkened.

"Something much worse."

He walked toward an old filing cabinet.

Pulled open a drawer.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Maps.

Newspaper articles.

He laid them across the table.

For the next hour, Jack showed Mia pieces of her father's hidden life.

Daniel had spent years tracking shipments.

Vehicles.

Names.

Bank accounts.

Disappearing people.

Motorcycle thefts.

Illegal weapons.

The Black Meridian wasn't one organization.

It was a network.

Transportation companies.

Security firms.

Private garages.

Corrupt officials.

People who could make someone disappear without leaving a trace.

At the center of the network was Victor Hale.

Mia stared at the documents.

"How many people?"

Jack shook his head.

"We don't know."

"How long?"

"At least ten years."

She looked at the photographs.

"Why didn't the police stop them?"

Jack laughed bitterly.

"Some police did."

"Some?"

"Others were paid."

Mia's stomach tightened.

"Who helped my father?"

Jack looked at the documents.

"Us."

"You?"

"Not at first."

Jack sat down.

"Daniel came to us after Thomas Reed betrayed the club."

Mia looked at the crossed-out photograph.

"Thomas was one of you."

"Yes."

"Why did he betray you?"

"Money."

"Just money?"

Jack shook his head.

"Fear."

Mia frowned.

"What's the difference?"

Jack looked at her.

"Money makes people greedy."

"Fear makes them dangerous."

Mia was silent.

Jack continued.

"Thomas had a wife and two children."

Mia looked at him.

"Hale threatened them."

"So Thomas gave him information."

"Yes."

"Did Hale hurt them?"

Jack's jaw tightened.

"Eventually."

Mia closed her eyes.

"And my father?"

"Daniel wanted to expose Hale."

"Did he succeed?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because someone inside our group warned Hale."

Mia's eyes opened.

"Who?"

Jack stared at the floor.

"We never found out."

Mia looked around the garage.

"So someone in this club betrayed my father."

Jack didn't answer.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Then maybe they're still here."

Silence.

Frank shifted uncomfortably.

Jack looked at Mia.

"That's why I didn't want you involved."

Mia shook her head.

"I'm already involved."

"No."

"Someone is hunting me."

"That doesn't mean you have to hunt them."

"My father disappeared because he was trying to stop them."

Jack stared at her.

"I need to know why."

Mia reached into her bag.

She pulled out the small flash drive.

"Then let's find out."

Jack looked at it.

"Where did you get that?"

"The box."

"Daniel left it?"

"Yes."

Jack took a breath.
