His shoulders were loose.
He wasn't posing.
He wasn't trying to look dangerous.
He simply looked comfortable.
Marcus had seen that before.
Not often.
But enough.
It was the stance of someone whose body remembered things his mind no longer needed to think about.
Marcus walked over.
“Daniel.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes?”
“You want light sparring?”
Daniel glanced at Ethan.
Ethan answered before him.
“Hard enough to be useful.”
Marcus gave Ethan a warning look.
“Controlled.”
“I know.”
Marcus turned to Daniel.
“You okay with that?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Marcus stepped back.
The others gathered around the mat.
A young woman named Claire stood near the mirrors with her arms crossed.
She had come to watch Ethan train.
She expected to see Ethan dominate another opponent.
She didn't expect to remember the face of the man he was about to fight.
Marcus raised one hand.
“Ready?”
Ethan nodded.
Daniel nodded.
“Begin.”
Ethan moved first.
Fast.
A straight right hand came toward Daniel's face.
Daniel tilted his head.
The punch missed.
Ethan immediately followed with a low kick.
Daniel stepped away.
The kick barely touched his leg.
Ethan smiled.
“Running?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Ethan came forward again.
Left hand.
Right hand.
Low kick.
Daniel slipped the punches.
Moved around the kick.
And stepped away.
There was no wasted movement.
No panic.
No unnecessary aggression.
Ethan's smile slowly disappeared.
He attacked again.
Daniel moved again.
Then Ethan threw a harder punch.
Daniel stepped inside.
His left hand touched Ethan's wrist.
His right hand controlled the elbow.
Daniel turned his hips.
It happened so quickly that most people didn't understand what they had seen.
Ethan's balance disappeared.
His feet left their position.
He hit the mat with a heavy thud.
Silence filled the room.
Daniel released him immediately.
Ethan stared upward.
Daniel offered a hand.
Ethan didn't take it.
He stood by himself.
“What was that?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Just balance.”
“You've done this before.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Daniel looked toward Marcus.
Marcus was staring at him.
Daniel simply said:
“A long time ago.”
Marcus didn't believe that was the whole story.
But he also knew better than to push.
When the First Laugh Disappeared
Ethan wasn't finished.
His pride had taken the first hit.
The second was coming.
“Again.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus hesitated.
Ethan spoke first.
“I'm fine.”
Marcus nodded.
“All right. But keep your head.”
Ethan returned to his stance.
This time, he didn't rush.
He watched Daniel.
Daniel watched him.
For several seconds, neither moved.
The room became quiet.
Ethan suddenly stepped left and exploded forward.
Daniel met him halfway.
Their shoulders collided.
Ethan tried to drive him backward.
Daniel gave ground.
One step.
Then another.
Ethan smiled.
He thought he had finally found something.
He pushed harder.
That was the mistake.
Daniel shifted his weight.
He turned.
He guided Ethan's momentum past him.
One small movement.
Ethan stumbled.
Daniel swept his leg.
Ethan fell again.
This time there was no laughter.
No one said anything.
Ethan stood.
His face was red.
“Again.”
Daniel sighed.
“You don't need to prove anything.”
“I do.”
“No.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Yes, I do.”
Daniel's expression softened.
“That's the problem.”
Ethan attacked.
He came faster than before.
Daniel didn't retreat.
He entered the space between them.
His hand controlled Ethan's arm.
His shoulder blocked Ethan's chest.
Daniel rotated.
Ethan dropped to one knee.
Daniel controlled the arm without forcing it.
Ethan struggled.
Daniel adjusted.
Ethan tried to turn.
Daniel moved with him.
Finally, Ethan slapped the mat.
“I give.”
Daniel released him instantly.
Ethan sat there, breathing hard.
Daniel stepped away.
No celebration.
No smile.
No raised fist.
Nothing.
Ethan looked up.
“Who are you?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“Daniel.”
“You know what I mean.”
Daniel didn't respond.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Ethan stood.
He removed his gloves.
For the first time that evening, he looked less angry than confused.
He had spent years learning how to overpower people.
