The first snow came early.

Miriam had predicted it.

They had only nineteen days.

The ranch worked from dawn until dark.

The reservoir began taking shape.

But the retaining wall was not finished.

A storm was coming.

The sky turned black.

The wind rose.

Elias studied the clouds.

“We have two days.”

Miriam shook her head.

“One.”

He looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“The pressure.”

He smiled.

“You're beginning to sound like my father.”

“Was he good?”

“The best.”

“Then listen to him.”

That night, the wind screamed.

The unfinished reservoir wall began to crack.

Amos shouted.

“Elias!”

Everyone ran outside.

Water from the mountain runoff was pouring into the quarry.

Too quickly.

The wall was failing.

Miriam looked at it.

“We need to release pressure.”

“How?”

“Open the eastern channel.”

“There is no channel.”

“There will be.”

She grabbed a shovel.

Elias stared.

“Miriam.”

“Come on.”

They worked through the night.

Men dug.

Women carried tools.

Caleb brought horses.

The storm grew worse.

Rain turned to sleet.

The ground became mud.

At midnight, the wall cracked again.

Elias shouted:

“Everybody back!”

Miriam looked at the structure.

“No.”

“What?”

“If it breaks now, the entire ranch floods.”

“Then move!”

“We need to redirect it.”

“How?”

She pointed toward the old quarry tunnel.

“Through there.”

“It's collapsed.”

“Partially.”

“You can't go inside.”

“I can.”

Elias grabbed her arm.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You hired me as a wife.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“I've done everything else.”

She pulled free.

“Now let me save the ranch.”

Before he could stop her, she entered the tunnel.

Elias followed.

The tunnel was dark.

Water rushed beneath their boots.

Rocks fell from the ceiling.

Miriam held a lantern.

She reached the blockage.

A wall of debris.

“We have to clear this.”

Elias stared.

“How?”

“With dynamite.”

“You're joking.”

“No.”

“Where did you get dynamite?”

“Your barn.”

He laughed in disbelief.

“You put dynamite in my barn?”

“For emergencies.”

“This is an emergency?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

He shook his head.

“You are definitely not gentle.”

She laughed.

Together they cleared the passage.

The water changed direction.

It rushed through the tunnel.

The pressure on the reservoir wall dropped.

Outside, the men watched.

The wall held.

The storm continued until dawn.

But the reservoir survived.

So did the ranch.

When the sun rose, the valley was covered in snow.

The first winter storm had arrived.

And Ward Ranch was ready.

The next morning, Elias found Miriam asleep beside the kitchen stove.

Her hair was loose.

Her boots were still on.

Her hands were covered in mud.

He placed a blanket over her.

She woke.

“What happened?”

“The wall held.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

“You saved the ranch.”

“No.”

He sat beside her.

“We saved it.”

She looked at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Elias said:

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“I expected a gentle bride.”

She smiled.

“And?”

“You are the most stubborn, difficult, fearless woman I've ever met.”

“That's not an apology.”

He laughed.

“No.”

He reached for her hand.

“I also expected a wife who would depend on me.”

Miriam looked at him.

“And?”

“I don't want that anymore.”

She waited.

“I want someone who stands beside me.”

Her expression softened.

“That's different.”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“Do you regret coming?”

She thought about Missouri.

Her mother's house.

The life she had left.

Then she looked around the kitchen.
