## Chapter 14: The Rescue

Major Thomas Vance strode into the station, his presence commanding absolute authority. He looked down at the blustering, red-faced sheriff on the floor.

"Secure the perimeter. Secure the property bag. Get the General," Thomas ordered.

Two operators sprinted down the hallway toward the holding cells.

In cell four, Sarah Hayes had stood up when the building began to shake. She stood perfectly still in the center of the cell, watching as the heavy door to the block was thrown open.

Two operators appeared at the bars. Upon seeing her, they immediately lowered their weapons and snapped to attention.

"General Hayes, sir. Are you injured?"

"I am uninjured, Sergeant," Sarah replied smoothly, as if they had just met in a hallway at the Pentagon. "Though I would appreciate having these cuffs removed."

"Yes, ma'am."

The operator fumbled with the keys he had grabbed from the desk, unlocking the cell door and then quickly unlocking the tight handcuffs. Sarah rubbed her wrists, assessing the men.

"Excellent response time, gentlemen."

"Thank you, ma'am. Command was... quite eager for us to retrieve you."

Sarah walked out of the cell and down the hallway. When she entered the lobby, she found a scene of total subjugation. The arrogant sheriff was hogtied on the floor, surrounded by elite soldiers. Deputy Miller was sitting against the wall, shaking like a leaf.

Major Thomas saluted her. "General. We have your secured device. The building is secure."

"Thank you, Major," Sarah said. She walked slowly over to where Boyd Cleary was struggling on the floor.

She looked down at him. The power dynamic had violently, irrevocably shifted.

"You..." Boyd sputtered, looking up at her, realizing for the first time the magnitude of his error. "Who are you?"

"I told you I wasn't lost, Sheriff," Sarah said softly. "I am Brigadier General Sarah Hayes of the United States Army. And you have committed a federal crime by detaining a military officer without cause, stripping me of classified government property, and attempting to fabricate charges."

Boyd's face went completely white.

"Major," Sarah turned to Thomas. "Have the FBI field office notified. I want federal agents here to take custody of Sheriff Cleary for civil rights violations and illegal detainment. And lock down his files. I suspect this isn't the first time he's done this."

"With pleasure, ma'am," Thomas smiled grimly.

## Chapter 15: The Aftermath

The sun had fully set by the time the FBI arrived in a convoy of black SUVs, taking over the scene from the military operators. The small town of Oak Haven was awake now, crowds gathered at police barricades, watching in stunned silence as their untouchable sheriff was led out of his own station in handcuffs, crying and begging for leniency.

Sarah stood by the open door of the lead Black Hawk. The cool night air felt refreshing after the stifling heat of the cell.

Deputy Miller, who had been fully cooperative and was being treated as a witness rather than an accomplice, walked out, looking utterly defeated. He saw Sarah and stopped.

"Ma'am... General, I mean," Miller stammered. "I... I should have stopped him. I'm sorry."

Sarah looked at the young man. "You had a choice today, Deputy. You chose fear over duty. Remember how this feels. Let it be the last time you make that choice."

Miller nodded, tears in his eyes, and walked toward the FBI agents to give his statement.

Sarah climbed into the helicopter. Major Thomas handed her her secure phone and a fresh bottle of water.

"Ready to go, General?"

"Take me to my cabin, Major," Sarah said, buckling herself in. "I believe I still have thirty-six hours of leave remaining."

"Yes, ma'am," Thomas grinned.

The twin engines roared to life, shaking the ground once more. The Black Hawks lifted off, banking sharply into the night sky, leaving the corrupt kingdom of Oak Haven in ruins below them.

Sarah Hayes looked out the window as the town faded into darkness. She took a sip of water, closed her eyes, and finally allowed herself a small, satisfied smile.

The lesson had, indeed, been taught. Just not by the sheriff.
