They didn't wear military uniforms.
They carried federal credentials.
Lena stood beside Reeves as the team entered the command building.
Her uncle was waiting.
Daniel Brooks.
Sixty-five.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
He looked at Lena.
Then smiled.
"Sweetheart."
She felt sick.
"You knew."
He sighed.
"About your father's investigation?"
"About everything."
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
Reeves stepped forward.
"Mr. Brooks, you're under federal investigation."
Daniel laughed.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
Reeves handed him a warrant.
Daniel read it.
His face remained calm.
Then he looked at Lena.
"Your father would be disappointed."
Lena felt anger rising.
"Don't talk about him."
"He was emotional."
"He was honest."
"He was naive."
"No."
Lena stepped closer.
"He trusted you."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"And that was his mistake."
The room went silent.
Lena looked at him.
"Why?"
Daniel stared at her.
"Because the world isn't divided into good people and bad people."
"Then what is it divided into?"
"People who understand power."
He looked around the room.
"Your father never did."
Reeves interrupted.
"Enough."
Daniel smiled.
"Major, you think you're protecting her."
He pointed toward Lena.
"You're not."
Then he looked at her.
"You're destroying her."
Lena shook her head.
"No."
She took a breath.
"You're finally showing me who you are."
The evidence was enough.
Not only did Daniel control the financial network.
He had manipulated the equipment records.
He had arranged the unauthorized transfers.
He had used Adrian Vale as a middleman.
And he had ordered people to intimidate anyone who came close.
But there was one final piece.
The original transaction ledger.
It was stored inside a locked room at Fort Meridian.
Daniel refused to reveal the location.
So investigators searched.
Hours passed.
Nothing.
Then Lena remembered something.
The black case.
The one in Vale's SUV.
She told Reeves.
They found the vehicle.
The case was still there.
Inside was the original ledger.
Not digital.
Paper.
Handwritten signatures.
Payment records.
Dates.
Names.
And at the bottom of the final page was Daniel Brooks's signature.
The case also contained something else.
A recording.
Her father's voice.
Lena listened.
Her father sounded tired.
But calm.
"If anything happens to me, I want Lena to know one thing."
There was a pause.
"I never regretted telling the truth."
Lena closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
"I only regret waiting too long."
Then another voice entered.
Daniel.
"Tom, you don't understand what you're doing."
Her father's answer was simple.
"I understand exactly what I'm doing."
The recording ended.
Lena cried silently.
Reeves stood beside her.
He didn't say anything.
He didn't need to.
Daniel Brooks was arrested before sunrise.
Adrian Vale surrendered his commission and agreed to cooperate.
The missing communications equipment was recovered from three storage sites.
The foreign contractor was investigated.
The entire Meridian Shield program was suspended.
And Fort Meridian changed.
Not immediately.
Not completely.
But enough.
The soldiers who had been afraid to speak began submitting complaints again.
