In every version, he was stronger.
Younger.
Angrier.
But the real Thomas looked old.
Sixty, perhaps.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
A scar across one cheek.
He stood at the top of the stairs.
"You still have Daniel's box."
Jack's jaw tightened.
"You killed him."
Thomas smiled.
"No."
"You tried."
"There's a difference."
Sara stepped forward.
"What did you do to my husband?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Your husband was stubborn."
Jack moved.
Thomas raised a gun.
"Don't."
The room froze.
Emma clung to her mother.
Jack's eyes remained on Thomas.
"You've been watching them."
"For years."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel hid something."
"The evidence."
Thomas nodded.
"He never gave it to anyone."
Jack understood.
"The box."
"No."
Thomas smiled.
"The box is only the beginning."
He turned and disappeared.
Jack rushed up the stairs.
By the time he reached the dining room, Thomas was gone.
The front door swung open.
Outside, an engine roared.
A black SUV disappeared down the highway.
Jack stood in the parking lot.
His fists clenched.
Sara came outside.
"Who was he?"
Jack didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"The reason your husband died."
She stared at him.
"And the reason my daughter is in danger."
Jack looked toward Emma.
He had spent twenty-two years running from Daniel's memory.
Now he understood.
Daniel had never been asking him to remember.
He had been asking him to finish something.
The Tape
That night, Jack took Sara and Emma to his workshop.
It was located behind an old farmhouse, surrounded by trees.
Inside were motorcycles, tools, engines, and shelves filled with decades of mechanical parts.
Jack locked the doors.
Then he played the cassette.
Static filled the room.
Then Daniel's voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
"Jack, if you're hearing this, I'm probably dead."
Sara covered her mouth.
Jack stared at the cassette player.
Daniel continued.
"I know what Thomas is doing. He's been using the club to move information and money. I found records."
A pause.
"If I disappear, don't trust the police immediately. Some of them are involved."
Jack closed his eyes.
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"Jack, I know you're angry with me. I know you think I chose this. But I didn't."
Jack's eyes filled with tears.
"I never blamed you."
The tape crackled.
"I know you did."
Jack whispered:
"I'm sorry."
Daniel continued.
"There is one thing Thomas doesn't know."
Static.
"The evidence isn't in the box."
Jack opened his eyes.
Sara looked at him.
"Then where is it?"
Daniel's voice answered from the tape.
"Emma."
Everyone froze.
The tape continued.
"I couldn't trust anyone with the evidence. So I hid it where nobody would search."
Sara stood.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel's recorded voice continued.
"One day, Emma will be old enough to understand."
The tape ended.
Silence.
Emma looked at Jack.
"My dad said you would know."
Jack stared at her.
Then he noticed something.
The tattoo.
The three lines.
The same three lines appeared on the key.
And suddenly he remembered something Daniel had told him twenty-two years earlier.
A joke.
A stupid joke.
A sentence they had laughed about.
"Some secrets are safest when they're hiding in plain sight."
Jack looked at Emma's necklace.
A small silver pendant.
"Where did you get that?"
"My dad."
Jack's hands began trembling.
"Can I see it?"
Emma took it off.
Jack turned it over.
Three tiny lines were engraved on the back.
He whispered:
"Oh, Daniel."
The evidence had been with Emma all along.
The Pendant
The pendant wasn't hollow.
At least, not visibly.
Jack examined it under a magnifying lamp.
Sara watched from across the workbench.
"What are you looking for?"
"A seam."
He found one.
Barely visible.
Jack used a tiny screwdriver.
The pendant opened.
Inside was a miniature memory card.
Sara stared.
"That's impossible."
"Not for Daniel."
Jack removed it.
He connected it to an old computer.
Files appeared.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Transfers.
Police officers.
Business owners.
Club members.
Thomas Vance.
And one more name.
Jack stared at it.
"That's not possible."
Sara moved closer.
"Who?"
Jack didn't answer.
She read the screen.
Her face went white.
It was Daniel Carter.
There were financial transfers under his name.
