"Teach me."
Daniel stared.
"Why?"
"Because I thought strength meant winning."
"And now?"
"I think strength means knowing when not to fight."
Daniel nodded.
"Good."
The lesson began.
Daniel taught Cole something no coach had ever taught him.
Patience.
Position.
Awareness.
Control.
Cole discovered that Daniel wasn't faster because he was younger.
He was faster because he wasted nothing.
Every movement had purpose.
Every step had meaning.
Every breath was controlled.
After an hour, Cole collapsed onto the mat.
Daniel remained standing.
Cole laughed.
"You could have been a champion."
Daniel looked away.
"I was."
Cole sat up.
"What happened?"
Daniel was silent for a long time.
Then he told him.
Years earlier, Daniel had commanded a small special operations unit.
During one mission, his team had been ordered to extract civilians from a dangerous location.
The intelligence had been wrong.
There were more enemies than expected.
Daniel's team survived.
But three civilians died.
Daniel blamed himself.
He left the military soon afterward.
Cole listened without speaking.
"That's why you disappeared?"
Daniel nodded.
"I thought if nobody knew who I was, nobody could ask me to be that man again."
Cole looked down.
"Did it work?"
"For a while."
Then the warehouse lights suddenly went out.
Daniel froze.
"Stay down."
A gunshot shattered a window.
Cole dropped.
Daniel moved through darkness.
Another shot.
Then another.
He reached the side entrance.
"Three men."
Cole whispered:
"How do you know?"
"Footsteps."
"What do we do?"
Daniel looked at him.
"We don't fight them."
"Why?"
"Because that's what they want."
Daniel pointed toward the back exit.
"Run."
They escaped through an underground drainage tunnel.
When they emerged several blocks away, police sirens filled the night.
Daniel looked at Cole.
"Now you understand."
Cole nodded.
"Understand what?"
"Winning isn't always beating someone."
Cole looked toward the burning warehouse.
"Sometimes it's surviving."
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly."
Victor Kane made his final move two nights later.
He kidnapped Elena.
Then he sent Daniel a message.
COME ALONE.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Cole stood beside him.
"I'm coming."
"No."
"Daniel—"
"No."
Cole looked angry.
"You taught me not to abandon people."
Daniel looked at him.
"I taught you to think."
"And I'm thinking."
"You'll get yourself killed."
Cole stepped closer.
"Then teach me how not to."
Daniel stared at him.
Finally, he nodded.
They went together.
The meeting took place inside an abandoned train depot.
Elena was tied to a chair.
Victor stood behind her.
The drive was on the table.
"You came," Victor said.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Let her go."
Victor smiled.
"You always were predictable."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"That's what you still don't understand."
Victor frowned.
Daniel continued.
"I came because I chose to."
He looked at Cole.
"And he came because he chose to."
Then Daniel looked toward the shadows.
"And they're here because I wanted them here."
Police lights suddenly appeared outside.
Victor's face changed.
Daniel had not come alone.
Elena smiled.
The entire operation had been recorded.
Victor realized he had lost.
But he pulled a weapon anyway.
Cole moved.
Daniel shouted.
Everything happened at once.
A gunshot.
A scream.
A struggle.
Then silence.
When it ended, Victor was on the floor.
The police entered.
Elena was safe.
Daniel stood motionless.
Cole looked at him.
