Chapter 1 - THE COLD ROOM.

The fluorescent lights in the interrogation room flickered overhead, throwing hard shadows across the stainless-steel table.

Detective Vance leaned closer to the tablet in front of him.

The recovered footage was frozen on one frame: my mother standing in the upstairs hallway, one hand clamped around my four-year-old daughter’s arm while Lily twisted helplessly beneath her grip.

Vance enlarged the image.

My mother’s face remained calm.

That was the worst part.

No panic.

No confusion.

No moment of lost control.

Only calculation.

“They didn’t lose their tempers,” Vance said.

I stared at the screen, the chilling reality of his words sinking into my bones.

Chapter 2 - THE SHATTERED WEDDING.

My mind violently snapped back to the events that had set this nightmare into motion.

It was supposed to be a day of celebration, a lavish gathering in a gilded ballroom.

Instead, I found myself collapsing onto the cold marble floor after a brutal strike.

My pristine white dress was torn across the abdomen, exposing the heavy curve of my pregnant belly.

Blood ran hotly down my chin, dripping onto the flawless stone beneath me.

The man standing over me was my husband, his fists clenched in rage.

"Stop embarrassing my family," he spat out, his voice echoing through the stunned silence of the room.
