The ledger.

Her mother had hidden it inside a book.

She opened the first page.

Numbers.

Names.

Dates.

Companies.

Payments.

Millions of dollars.

Naomi read through the entries.

Her stomach tightened.

The money had been transferred through shell companies.

Several companies were controlled by people connected to Richard Coleman.

But there was something else.

A signature.

Richard Coleman.

Twenty-two years earlier.

Naomi sat back.

Her mother had been telling the truth.

The next morning, she contacted Mr. Chen.

He agreed to meet her privately.

When Naomi arrived, he was waiting with Emily.

"I knew your mother," he said.

Naomi sat down.

"How?"

"She was one of the few people who warned us."

"Why didn't anyone listen?"

Mr. Chen looked away.

"Because we trusted the wrong people."

Naomi placed the blue ledger on the table.

Mr. Chen opened it.

His expression changed.

"Where did you find this?"

"My mother."

He turned the pages.

"These numbers..."

"They match the transfers in the old project."

Emily looked at her father.

"What does this mean?"

Mr. Chen answered quietly.

"It means someone stole the project."

Naomi swallowed.

"Who?"

Mr. Chen looked at her.

"We need proof."

Naomi nodded.

"I know."

"Do you understand what you're risking?"

"Yes."

"You could lose your job."

"Maybe."

"You could be threatened."

"I know."

Mr. Chen looked at her.

"Then why continue?"

Naomi thought about her mother.

"Because she spent twenty years believing nobody would listen."

She closed the ledger.

"I want to listen."

Mr. Chen nodded.

"Then we will help you."

But neither of them noticed the man sitting across the street.

He had watched Naomi enter the building.

He had watched her leave.

And he had taken photographs.

His name was Daniel Voss.

He worked for Richard Coleman.

And Richard was about to discover that the waitress he had tried to humiliate was holding the one piece of evidence he had spent twenty years trying to destroy.

The Man Who Thought Money Could Silence Her

Richard's first response was disbelief.

His second was anger.

His third was fear.

He called Daniel into his office.

"You saw her?"

"Yes."

"With Chen?"

"Yes."

"What did she have?"

"We don't know."

Richard stood at the window.

The city stretched below him.

He had spent twenty years building his reputation.

He had survived lawsuits.

Business disputes.

Failed projects.

Public scandals.

He always found a way out.

But this was different.

If the blue ledger existed, it could connect him directly to the original Harbor Point fraud.

"Find it," he said.

Daniel nodded.

"And the woman?"

"Naomi?"

"Yes."

"What should I do?"

Richard turned.

"Nothing."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Nothing?"

"Not yet."

Richard thought for a moment.

Then he smiled.

"I know how to deal with people like her."

That afternoon, Naomi arrived at the restaurant.

Her manager noticed immediately that something was wrong.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"You look distracted."

"I'm fine."

Before he could respond, a man in an expensive suit entered.

Richard Coleman.

He walked directly toward Naomi.

The restaurant became quiet.

Richard smiled.

"Naomi."

She looked at him.

"Mr. Coleman."

"I thought we should talk."

"About what?"

"The bet."

Naomi raised an eyebrow.

"You still remember that?"

Richard laughed.

"Of course."

He placed an envelope on the counter.

Naomi looked at it.

"What's that?"

"One hundred thousand dollars."

She didn't touch it.

"You lost the bet."

Richard smiled.

"Exactly."

Naomi stared at him.

"So you're paying."

"I keep my promises."

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a cashier's check.

For $100,000.

Naomi looked at it.

Then at Richard.

"What do you want?"

"Nothing."

She didn't believe him.

He smiled.

"I simply respect people who surprise me."

"Really?"

"Really."

Then he lowered his voice.

"But I'd like you to forget about the Harbor Point documents."

Naomi's expression hardened.

"So that's what this is."

Richard shrugged.

"Think of it as compensation for the inconvenience."

"I don't want your money."

"Everyone wants money."

"Not from you."

Richard leaned closer.

"You should reconsider."

"No."

"You have a daughter."

Naomi froze.

Richard smiled.

"I know."

The room suddenly felt cold.

"You've been watching me."

"I'm simply informed."

Naomi picked up the check.

Richard smiled.

Then she tore it in half.

His smile disappeared.

She tore it again.

And again.

Then she dropped the pieces into the trash.

"I don't sell silence."
