“He killed someone?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He was killed.”

Silence.

“He won the fight,” Daniel continued. “But the other man fell badly. My brother stayed. He kept going.”

Daniel's voice remained calm.

“By the time someone pulled him away, the damage was already done.”

Martin said nothing.

Daniel looked at the enormous words printed above the entrance.

CONTROL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN POWER.

“I spent years learning how to fight,” he said.

“Then I spent the rest of my life learning why fighting wasn't enough.”

Dylan's Challenge

Dylan returned twenty minutes later.

He had changed his shirt.

His anger had not changed.

He walked straight toward Martin.

“I want another round.”

Martin shook his head.

“No.”

Dylan looked at Daniel.

“With him.”

The gym went silent.

Daniel didn't move.

Martin stepped forward.

“You're not fighting Daniel.”

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”

Dylan laughed.

“Scared for him?”

“No.”

“Then what's the problem?”

Martin looked at Dylan.

“You're angry.”

“So?”

“Angry people don't spar safely.”

Dylan looked toward Daniel.

“You think you're better than me?”

Daniel answered honestly.

“No.”

That surprised him.

Dylan smiled.

“Good.”

“I think you're inexperienced.”

The smile disappeared.

“You don't know anything about me.”

“I know enough.”

Dylan stepped closer.

“Then prove it.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You don't want a fight.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

Dylan's eyes narrowed.

“You think you're some kind of teacher?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I think you're looking for someone to punish because you're embarrassed.”

Several people exchanged glances.

Dylan's face reddened.

“You don't know me.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

He walked toward the edge of the mat.

Then he stopped.

“If Martin allows it, I'll spar with you.”

Martin immediately said, “Daniel—”

Daniel raised a hand.

“But there are conditions.”

Dylan laughed.

“Conditions?”

“Three.”

“Name them.”

“No striking.”

Dylan shrugged.

“Fine.”

“Second, the moment either person taps, the other releases.”

“Obviously.”

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Not obviously.”

Dylan's jaw tightened.

“Third?”

“If you lose control, the round ends.”

Dylan smirked.

“I'm not going to lose control.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is exactly what people say before they do.”

Martin looked around the gym.

He was uncomfortable.

But he also knew something.

Daniel had not challenged Dylan.

Dylan had challenged Daniel.

And there was a difference.

“Five minutes,” Martin said.

Dylan smiled.

“That's all?”

Daniel removed his jacket.

Underneath was a plain black T-shirt.

No scars displayed deliberately.

No championship logo.

No belt.

No statement.

He stepped onto the mat.

The room became completely silent.

Five Minutes

Dylan moved first.

Fast.

He shot forward with a double-leg takedown.

Daniel stepped aside.

Not backward.

Aside.

Dylan passed him.

The room reacted with a murmur.

Dylan turned quickly.

Again.

This time Daniel caught his wrist.

Dylan pulled.

Daniel released.

Dylan attacked again.

Another entry.

Another miss.

The old man's movements were almost disappointing.

There was no dramatic speed.

No explosive strength.

Just positioning.

Dylan finally managed to grab Daniel's waist.

He drove forward.

Daniel lowered his center of gravity.

Dylan pushed harder.

Nothing happened.

It felt as if Daniel had become part of the floor.

Dylan tried to change direction.

Daniel moved with him.

Then, suddenly, Dylan was on the mat.

The takedown had been so clean that several people didn't understand what happened.

Daniel did not celebrate.

He did not even look pleased.

He simply settled into position.

Dylan immediately tried to escape.

Daniel allowed him to move.

Every time Dylan created an opening, Daniel closed it.

Every time Dylan tried to explode, Daniel redirected him.

Twenty seconds.

Thirty.

Forty.

Dylan began breathing harder.

Daniel barely seemed to breathe at all.

“Get up!” someone shouted.

Dylan tried.

Daniel let him.

Dylan stood.

Then he attacked.

This time he grabbed Daniel's neck.

Daniel turned.

A moment later, Dylan's back touched the mat.

Daniel had taken his balance without force.

Dylan looked shocked.

“How—”

Daniel released him.

“Again.”

Dylan charged.

The round continued.

Two minutes.

Three.

Dylan became frustrated.

Frustration turned into force.

Force turned into mistakes.

Daniel exploited every mistake.

Not brutally.

Precisely.

At four minutes, Dylan was exhausted.

Daniel still looked calm.

“Time!” Martin called.

Dylan dropped to his knees.

The gym remained silent.

Daniel stood.

“You're talented.”

Dylan looked up.

The compliment confused him.

“But talent without control becomes a liability.”

Dylan breathed heavily.

Daniel offered him a hand.

Dylan stared at it.

Then took it.

For one second, the hostility disappeared.

Then someone near the wall laughed.

Dylan looked toward the sound.

A younger fighter named Kyle was smiling.

“Man,” Kyle said, “that old guy made you look like a beginner.”

Dylan's expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

“Don't.”

Dylan looked at him.
