"Gwen told me something last week."

"What?"

"She said I should think very carefully before I ruined someone's future."

Dana's expression hardened.

"Did she threaten you?"

"No."

Grace paused.

"Not exactly."

Scott pushed his chair back.

He wanted to confront Gwen immediately.

Instead, he forced himself to remain calm.

"From now on, nobody in this family deals with Gwen alone."

Grace nodded.

That night, Scott installed a temporary camera facing the backyard.

He checked the locks.

He photographed the damaged fence.

He saved the police report.

And before going to bed, he stood at the upstairs window.

Gwen's house was dark.

Then, at eleven forty-three, a light came on in her upstairs bedroom.

A shadow moved behind the curtain.

Scott watched for several seconds.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Only one sentence.

You should have listened to your daughter.

Scott stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

This is going to get much worse.

He looked toward Grace's bedroom.

For the first time, Scott understood that the broken fence was not the beginning of the problem.

It was only the first thing he could see.

Scott did not sleep much that night.

By morning, he had made a decision.

He would not confront Gwen.

He would not threaten anyone.

And he would not allow anger to make decisions for him.

Instead, he would document everything.

He created a folder on his computer.

He named it simply:

Family Safety.

Inside it, he saved photographs of the damaged fence, the police report, the anonymous messages, and every communication connected to the dispute involving Dylan.

Dana watched him from the doorway.

"You're treating this like a case."

"Maybe it is one."

"You think Gwen is going to keep escalating?"

"I don't know."

Scott looked at the screen.

"But I think we need to be ready if she does."

Over the next two weeks, strange things began happening.

The first was small.

Someone moved the trash bins from Scott's driveway to the opposite side of the street.

Then the mailbox was found open.

Nothing had been stolen.

A week later, Owen's bicycle tire was punctured.

Again, nothing valuable was taken.

Then Grace discovered that someone had placed a handwritten note beneath the windshield wiper of her car.

She brought it inside without touching it.

Scott read it.

You can't hide behind your family forever.

Dana called the police.

The officer who arrived this time was more serious.

"You've got a pattern developing."

Scott nodded.

"That's what I think."

"Do you have cameras?"

"One in the backyard."

"Check it."

Scott did.

The camera had recorded several hours of footage.

But at 2:13 a.m., the video suddenly became distorted.

At 2:16, it returned.

During those three minutes, the camera showed nothing.

Someone had interfered with it.

Scott stared at the screen.

"That's not an accident."

The officer agreed.

"Back up the footage. Don't overwrite anything."

Scott did exactly that.

Meanwhile, Gwen remained strangely calm.

She continued living next door as though nothing had happened.

She watered her plants.

Collected her mail.

Drove to work.

She even smiled at Scott once when they crossed paths.

That smile disturbed him more than an angry confrontation would have.

Then something unexpected happened.

Patrick Monroe contacted Scott.

Patrick was the cyclist whose accident had originally brought Grace into the dispute involving Dylan.

He asked to meet.

They sat in a quiet coffee shop across town.

Patrick looked exhausted.

"I've been thinking about your daughter."

Scott said nothing.

Patrick continued.

"She did something most people wouldn't have done."

"What?"

"She stayed."

Scott knew what he meant.

Grace had stayed at the scene when others might have driven away.

Patrick leaned closer.

"Someone has been asking questions about me."

Scott's stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Police?"

"I told them."

Patrick looked down at his coffee.

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"Someone offered me money."

Scott stared at him.
