The woman looked toward the courtroom doors.

“Because she thought you were safer believing she was dead.”

The little boy lifted his head.

“Is Mommy really outside?”

Before anyone could answer, the doors opened.

A thin woman stood there, trembling.

The teenager stopped breathing.

He remembered those eyes.

His mother took one step forward.

“I’m sorry.”

He didn’t run to her.

He only tightened his arm around his brother.

Then he asked the question that silenced the entire courtroom.

“Before I let you near him again… tell me who made you leave us.”

The woman walked slowly toward the front of the courtroom.

She pulled an old photograph from her purse.

Two boys were sleeping beside a woman in a hospital bed.

Their mother.

The teenager’s hands began to shake.

“Where did you get that?”

“She gave it to me.”

The judge leaned forward.

The woman wiped her tears.

“I’m your aunt.”

The teenager looked at his little brother.

Then back at her.

“We were told we didn’t have family.”

“I know.”

Her voice cracked.

“Your mother disappeared because someone threatened to take both of you if she stayed.”

The teenager’s anger broke through his grief.

“Then why didn’t she come back?”

The woman looked toward the courtroom doors.

“Because she thought you were safer believing she was dead.”
