The street was relatively empty, the heat keeping most sensible folks indoors. Henry was sitting in his wheelchair near the open front door of the shop, catching a meager cross breeze, while Clara was sweeping the sidewalk outside. A black SUV hopped the curb and slammed to a halt right in front of the store tires, screeching against the concrete. George and Troy Evans stepped out. They didn't bother with pleasantries.
"Time's up, old man." George barked, stepping over Clara's broom. He was a towering figure with a thick neck and a sneer that had broken the spirits of dozens of tenants before them. "We brought the final paperwork. You sign it today or we start clearing out this junk ourselves."
"We told your bosses," Henry said, his voice trembling but defiant. "This place isn't for sale. Now get off my property."
Troy, the younger and more volatile of the two, laughed. He kicked over a display of galvanized steel buckets, sending them clattering loudly down the sidewalk. "You don't seem to understand the situation, [ __ ]. You don't have a choice."
Clara immediately stepped between the large men and her husband. "You bullies, get out of here right now," she demanded, raising her chin. "I'm calling the police."
"The cops!" George scoffed, taking a menacing step toward her. "The cops work for the people who pay our checks, lady. They aren't coming." He reached out and violently snatched the broom from Clara's hands, snapping the wooden handle over his knee and tossing the splintered pieces into the street.
Clara, terrified, but operating on pure adrenaline to protect her husband, shoved George in the chest. "Leave us alone."
It happened in a flash.
Troy's fist swung out in a brutal, unprovoked arc. The heavy backhand struck Clara squarely across the jaw. The sickening crack of bone against knuckles echoed down the empty block. The force of the blow lifted the 70-year-old woman off her feet. She slammed backward into the brick facade of the hardware store and crumpled to the pavement, her head striking the concrete.
