He carried two children out.

Then three.

Then went back.

Abigail was trapped beneath a fallen beam.

"Ethan!"

He lifted it.

"Move."

"I can't."

He pulled harder.

The wood shifted.

She crawled free.

They ran.

The schoolhouse collapsed behind them.

Abigail stared at the flames.

Everything she owned was gone.

Ethan stood beside her.

"I'll rebuild it."

She looked at him.

"You can't rebuild everything."

"No."

"Then what can you rebuild?"

Ethan looked at the children.

"Enough."

She took his hand.

He held it.

Across town, Vane watched from a window.

He knew the final confrontation had begun.

 The Old Mine

Martha discovered where Vane kept the original records.

An abandoned silver mine outside town.

Ethan, Abigail, and Martha entered at night.

They found crates of documents.

Land deeds.

Forged signatures.

Lists of payments.

Names of dead men.

And a letter.

It was from the county judge.

The judge had been paid.

Ethan stared at the evidence.

"This can destroy him."

Martha nodded.

"We need to get it to the marshal."

Footsteps echoed.

Vane's men.

They were trapped.

Ethan extinguished the lantern.

Gunfire exploded through the mine.

Abigail crawled behind a rock.

Martha grabbed the ledger.

Ethan fought his way toward the entrance.

One man attacked.

Ethan disarmed him.

Another fired.

Ethan was hit in the shoulder.

He fell.

Abigail screamed.

But Ethan rose.

The Wraith had returned.

Not as a killer.

As a shield.

He got them out.

They escaped before the mine collapsed.

 The Man Behind the Wraith

Ethan collapsed at the schoolyard.

Abigail treated his wound.

"You could have died."

"I know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

She tied the bandage.

"Why do you keep risking yourself?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Because when I was young, I thought being feared would keep people safe."

"And now?"

"I know better."

"What changed?"

He touched her hand.

"You."

She stared.

"Ethan."

"I spent five years trying to disappear."

"Why?"

"Because I thought the world would be better without me."

Abigail shook her head.

"It wasn't."

"No."

"Do you know what I think?"

"What?"

"You weren't afraid of becoming the Wraith."

She leaned closer.

"You were afraid there was nothing underneath him."

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

She kissed him.

Only once.

Softly.

Then she whispered:

"There is."

 Red Hollow Stands

The people of Red Hollow finally stood together.

Widow Parker brought twelve farmers.

The blacksmith brought weapons.

The preacher brought horses.

Even men who had once feared Vane joined.

Abigail stood before them.

"We have been afraid for too long."

Ethan stood behind her.

Nobody cheered.

Nobody shouted.

They simply nodded.

Vane had money.

They had numbers.

The marshal was two days away.

They needed to survive until then.

Vane attacked at dawn.

Gunfire erupted.

Farmers defended their homes.

Ethan moved through the streets.

He did not kill.

He disarmed.

He stopped.

He protected.

One by one, Vane's men surrendered.

Finally, Vane himself stood in the street.

He held a gun against Abigail.

Ethan stopped.

"Let her go."

Vane smiled.

"Back to being a hero?"

"No."

Ethan lowered his weapon.

"Back to being a man."

Vane fired.

Ethan moved.

The bullet missed Abigail.

Ethan struck Vane's gun away.

Then he stepped back.

"Your choice."

Vane looked around.

There was nowhere left to run.

He surrendered.

 The Marshal

The federal marshal arrived two days later.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Vane was arrested.

The judge resigned.

The corrupt deputies were removed.

The stolen land was returned.

Red Hollow slowly changed.

But Ethan did not celebrate.

He went to the cemetery.

There was a small grave.

His father's.
