CHAPTER 1
The Salute That Changed Everything
Silence.
Not the comfortable kind that settled after a speech or followed the final note of an orchestra.
This silence was different.
It spread across the grand ballroom like an invisible wave, swallowing every whispered conversation, every clink of crystal glasses, every smug smile that had filled the room only seconds earlier.
Hundreds of eyes remained fixed on one woman.
Celeste.
She stood alone in the center of the ballroom, one hand smoothing the torn sleeve of her evening gown with the same calm precision she used to button a military uniform. The crimson scratch across her shoulder, exposed moments ago by Emily's deliberate humiliation, had disappeared beneath the elegant black fabric once more.
Her expression never changed.
No tears.
No anger.
No plea for sympathy.
She had long learned that begging people to believe the truth was the quickest way to lose what little dignity remained.
