"You've been here twenty minutes."

"Yes."

"And you think you understand my students?"

"No."

She stood.

"I think I understand movement."

Marcus's smile disappeared.

"Then show me."

The room became quiet.

Amara looked at the mat.

Then at Marcus.

"Now?"

"You said you came for an evaluation."

"I did."

"Then evaluate."

Amara slowly removed her backpack.

She placed it beside the bench.

Then she reached for the zipper of her green jacket.

Marcus watched.

He had no idea why.

Something about the way she moved made the room feel different.

Not dramatic.

Not threatening.

Just controlled.

She removed the jacket.

Underneath, she wore a simple black training shirt.

No logos.

No medals.

No academy name.

Nothing that announced who she was.

Marcus pointed toward the mat.

"Warm up."

Amara stepped onto the floor.

Someone whispered:

"She's tiny."

Another student laughed.

Marcus heard them.

He didn't stop them.

He wanted to see what happened next.

Amara began moving.

At first, nothing looked impressive.

A few stretches.

A slow jog.

Shoulder rotations.

Basic footwork.

Marcus almost lost interest.

Then she changed direction.

Her movement became sharper.

Faster.

She shifted her weight without lifting her feet.

She moved backward without crossing her legs.

She pivoted.

Stopped.

Turned.

Reset.

Marcus's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But his assistant instructor, Daniel Price, noticed.

"What's wrong?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Amara stopped.

She looked at Marcus.

"Who am I sparring?"

Marcus glanced around.

"Daniel."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Me?"

Marcus nodded.

"Light contact."

Daniel stepped onto the mat.

He was twenty-eight.

Five feet eleven.

A black belt.

He smiled at Amara.

"No hard feelings."

Amara nodded.

"None."

Marcus stepped back.

"Begin."

Daniel moved first.

He threw a controlled jab.

Amara moved her head slightly.

The punch missed.

Daniel stepped forward again.

Another jab.

Amara moved.

Another.

She moved again.

The students began laughing.

"She's just running."

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel frowned.

He increased the pressure.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Amara continued retreating.

Then Daniel threw a low kick.

Amara shifted her front foot.

The kick passed beside her leg.

Daniel recovered.

Amara tapped his shoulder.

The room went silent.

Daniel looked down at his shoulder.

Then at her.

"What?"

Amara stepped back.

"You left it open."

Someone laughed nervously.

Daniel attacked again.

This time, Amara moved forward.

Not backward.

She slipped past his right hand.

Touched his ribs.

Moved away.

Daniel's expression changed.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Marcus watched closely.

"Again."

Daniel attacked.

Amara defended.

Again.

And again.

She never tried to overpower him.

She didn't need to.

She used angles.

Distance.

Timing.

Daniel became frustrated.

He lunged.

Amara pivoted.

His momentum carried him past her.

He stumbled.

The room went silent.

Amara didn't celebrate.

She simply reset.

Marcus stepped onto the mat.

"Enough."

Daniel stepped away.

Marcus looked at Amara.

"Who trained you?"

Amara hesitated.

"My father."

"What's his name?"

She looked at him.

"Samuel Lewis."

Marcus froze.

The name meant something.

He just couldn't remember what.

"Where is he?"

"He's dead."

The room became quiet.

Marcus looked away.

"I'm sorry."

Amara nodded.

"Thank you."

Marcus studied her again.

"How long did he train you?"

"Since I was six."

"Six?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Mostly private."

Marcus nodded slowly.
