Something in his expression changed.
Rachel Blake's blue Honda pulled to the curb with a screech of brakes.
Rachel stepped out.
She was still wearing her work badge.
Her purse slid from her shoulder.
"What happened?"
Then she saw Dominic.
Everything in her face hardened.
"Why is he here?"
Emily looked toward the envelope.
Then toward three boys standing near the bicycle racks.
Officer Grant turned to Dominic.
"We're going to need you to answer some questions."
The younger officer stepped forward.
His hand went toward his handcuffs.
Emily saw them.
And something inside her broke open.
She ran.
Past her mother.
Past Mrs. Porter.
Straight toward Dominic.
She wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Don't arrest him!" she screamed.
Dominic froze.
The entire parking lot froze with him.
Then Emily lifted her face.
Tears ran down her cheeks.
"He's the only one who knows Dad didn't die in that accident."
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a boy near the bike racks dropped his backpack and ran.
Officer Grant shouted after him.
The younger officer took off in pursuit.
Dominic's face went pale.
Rachel looked as though the ground beneath her had disappeared.
And Emily held on to the man we had spent a week fearing.
That was the afternoon our town discovered that a child could carry a secret heavy enough to bend an entire community.
The Promise of a Dead Man
The boy who ran was Kyle Draper.
But at that moment, nobody knew what his running meant.
The officers chased him while Carter Wilkes and Mason Truit stood near the bicycle racks looking terrified. Their families had influence in Edmond. Carter's father served on the city council. Mason's aunt sat on the school board.
Until that afternoon, those facts had meant nothing to me.
Afterward, they meant everything.
Rachel stared at Dominic.
"What did Emily mean?"
Dominic looked down at the little girl holding his vest.
"Emily," he said softly, "you need to let your mom hold you."
Emily shook her head.
Dominic did not pull her away.
Rachel's voice cracked.
"What does she mean?"
Dominic finally looked at her.
"Aaron left something behind."
Rachel went still.
"Don't."
"He left evidence."
"You don't get to say his name to me."
Dominic accepted the blow without anger.
"I know."
Mrs. Porter handed Officer Grant the brown envelope.
Inside, beneath the photographs and emails, was Emily's note.
It contained one sentence.
They said if I tell my mom, they'll show everyone what they found in Dad's locker.
Rachel read the words.
Her knees nearly gave out.
Dominic reached toward her, then stopped.
That hesitation told me more about their history than any explanation could have.
Eventually, Officer Grant asked the question everyone wanted answered.
"What locker?"
Dominic looked at Emily.
The child finally released him and went to her mother.
Rachel held her.
Dominic spoke quietly.
"Aaron hid something before he died. He didn't tell me where."
Rachel stared at him.
"How could you know that?"
"Because he told me to watch her."
Dominic turned his wrist.
The tattooed words were visible.
KEEP WATCHING HER.
Then he told us about Aaron.
Two years earlier, Aaron Blake had been working as a safety supervisor during military training exercises. The official story was simple. A vehicle malfunctioned. There was an explosion. Aaron died trying to prevent others from being hurt.
Dominic had been there.
He had been injured.
And before Aaron lost consciousness, he had grabbed Dominic's arm.
"Keep watching her."
Dominic had thought Aaron meant Rachel and Emily.
Later, he realized Aaron might have meant something else too.
Aaron had been frightened before his death.
Not of dying.
Of being silenced.
Dominic remembered him mentioning Captain Ellis Vane.
A respected officer.
A man with political connections.
A man who had attended Aaron's funeral and spoken warmly about his service.
Dominic had never trusted him.
Rachel knew that.
At the cemetery, Dominic had tried to confront Vane.
Rachel had seen only the anger.
She had been grieving, and grief does not always wait for facts.
"Your world already took my husband," she had told Dominic. "Stay away from my daughter."
So he did.
Mostly.
He did not knock on her door.
He did not ask for a place at birthdays.
He did not challenge her decisions.
But when Emily began attending Willow Creek, Dominic found ways to keep his promise without breaking Rachel's command.
He watched from a distance.
He noticed when Emily stopped smiling.
He noticed the boys who followed her.
He noticed the torn belongings.
He sent reports.
No one listened closely enough.
Then, three weeks earlier, Emily had found something hidden inside an old jewelry box.
A paper raven.
Underneath it, a key.
She had brought the raven to school because it reminded her of her father.
That was when Carter Wilkes saw the key.
His father owned several storage properties.
Carter recognized the tag.
He told Mason.
Mason told Kyle.
Together, the boys found the storage locker.
Inside was a metal case containing a notebook, a flash drive, photographs, and a letter addressed to Rachel.
They did not understand everything.
But they understood enough to know it was dangerous.
They began using the secret against Emily.
They told her her father had hidden evidence because he was a criminal.
