Chapter 3: The Boardroom Siege

By Wednesday morning, a financial Category 5 hurricane had made landfall on Van Der Bilt Enterprises, and nobody inside the company knew where the wind was coming from.

Eleanor Van Der Bilt sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table in her Midtown Manhattan headquarters, her silver hair styled immaculately, but her hands trembling slightly as she stared at the quarterly balance sheets. Surrounding her were her top financial advisors, lawyers, and her daughter, Vanessa, who sat wringing her hands nervously.

"What do you mean our credit lines are frozen?!" Eleanor screamed, slamming her fist onto the table, shattering the veneer of aristocratic composure she usually projected. "We have banked with Manhattan Heritage Trust for forty years! They cannot simply call in a $300 million commercial loan without a warning!"

"Ma'am, it's not just Manhattan Heritage," her Chief Legal Counsel stammered, sweating profusely into his tailored collar. "Three of our primary lenders sold our debt portfolios at a discount over the last forty-eight hours. A single corporate entity bought up all our short-term liabilities, and as of 9:00 AM today, they have exercised the immediate repayment clauses. If we don't produce $450 million in liquid capital by Friday, they have the legal right to seize our core assets—including the Southampton estate and this building."

"Who bought the debt?!" Eleanor shrieked, her face turning a blotchy, furious red. "Who is trying to hostile-takeover my family?!"

"We don't know, ma'am," the advisor admitted miserably. "It’s a shell conglomerate registered through a private aerospace and logistics trust. Their legal representatives are waiting in the reception area right now. They demanded an immediate emergency board meeting."
