Stand beside power, even when power is cruel.

Rochelle surveyed the room.

“Well,” she said.

Nobody answered.

“Must be nice.”

Still nothing.

“Five minutes before shift and half of you are sitting around like this is a bus station.”

Chairs moved immediately.

Workers stood.

Rochelle pointed at the young man with the taped wrist.

“Ruiz.”

He looked up.

“If that wrist slows you down today, clock out and go home.”

Mateo Ruiz swallowed.

“It's swollen.”

“Then stop looking at it like that fixes anything.”

Nolan laughed.

Avery smiled.

Celeste watched Mateo hide his wrist under the table.

Rochelle turned.

“Tanya.”

The woman in the red hoodie froze.

“If returns is behind today, don't start with the daycare excuse.”

“My son—”

“We all have lives.”

Tanya stopped speaking.

“Somehow most of us manage not to bring our problems in a tote bag.”

A few workers looked down.

Celeste took a slow drink of coffee.

Then Rochelle saw her.

Her eyes traveled from Celeste's shoes to her jacket to the temporary badge.

“Hey.”

Celeste looked up.

“You.”

“Yes?”

“Why are you standing around my breakroom?”

“I'm waiting for an assignment.”

“Perfect.”

Rochelle smiled.

“Restrooms by Dock Three.”

Celeste waited.

“Grab a bucket.”

She pointed toward the supply closet.

“And start there.”

Celeste glanced at the clock.

“I'm assigned to floor operations.”

Rochelle's smile widened.

“You were told?”

“Yes.”

“By who?”

“The staffing coordinator.”

Rochelle stepped closer.

“Let me explain something.”

The room became silent again.

“Staffing coordinators sit in offices. I run this floor.”

She pointed toward the hallway.

“If I tell you to clean toilets, that's floor operations.”

Celeste studied her.

“Why did you choose me?”

Rochelle blinked.

The question seemed to surprise her.

“Because I can.”

“That's not an operational reason.”

The smile disappeared.

“It is the only reason you need.”

Celeste looked around the room.

Nobody met her eyes.

Rochelle stepped closer.

“Listen carefully, temp. People come here, do what they're told, and earn their hours.”

She looked down at Celeste's sneakers.

“Especially people who walk in with no seniority, no skills, and shoes that look like they came out of a donation bin.”

Nolan laughed again.

Celeste didn't.

“And if I refuse?”

Rochelle's face brightened.

That was when Celeste understood.

Rochelle enjoyed this.

“Then I call security.”

She leaned closer.

“And I make sure your agency file says difficult.”

A pause.

“Uncooperative.”

Another pause.

“Bad attitude.”

Celeste said nothing.

Rochelle smiled.

“Do you know how many warehouses use the same staffing pool?”

Celeste shook her head.

“Enough that you'll be lucky to get a night shift wiping carts at a grocery store.”

The words were rehearsed.

Celeste knew it immediately.

Rochelle had said them before.

Many times.

She walked toward the supply closet.

Opened it.

Pulled out a bucket.

Yellow gloves.

A toilet brush.

Disinfectant.

Then she carried them back.

Instead of taking them to Dock Three, she placed them carefully on the breakroom table.

Rochelle frowned.

“What are you doing?”

“Making the assignment visible.”

“Pick it up.”

Celeste didn't move.

“I said pick it up.”

“I heard you.”

Rochelle grabbed the bucket.

Shoved it against Celeste's chest.

Brown water splashed across the faded olive jacket.

The room went completely still.

Mateo half stood.

Nolan snapped, “Sit down.”

Mateo obeyed.

Rochelle stared into Celeste's eyes.

“You don't embarrass me in front of my floor.”

Celeste looked down at the stain.

Then back at Rochelle.

“Your floor?”

“That’s right.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“Rochelle.”

Everyone turned.

Elliot Frayne stood there.

Regional Operations Director.

He wore a navy coat, polished shoes, and an expression that changed the moment he saw Celeste.

His face drained of color.

“Ms. Warren?”

Rochelle turned.

“Who?”

Elliot swallowed.

“Celeste Warren.”

Three seconds passed.

Then Celeste reached inside her jacket.

She removed a black executive credential.

Held it up.

CELESTE WARREN

FOUNDER & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

WARREN FREIGHT SYSTEMS

Nobody breathed.

Celeste lowered the card.

She looked at Rochelle.

“You told me to scrub toilets.”

Rochelle's mouth opened.

“I didn't know—”

“That I owned the company?”

Silence.

Celeste shook her head.

“That is not your excuse.”

She looked around the room.

“That is the problem.”

The Room Where Nobody Spoke

Elliot Frayne looked like a man watching his career collapse in real time.

“Ms. Warren,” he said quickly, “I wasn't aware you were conducting a site visit.”

“I wasn't conducting a site visit.”

Celeste glanced at the bucket.

“I was working.”

Rochelle stared at her.

The woman who had seemed enormous ten minutes earlier suddenly looked ordinary.

Very ordinary.

Her authority had existed largely because everyone in the room believed she had more power than they did.

Now that illusion was gone.

Rochelle's face tightened.

“You set me up.”

Celeste looked at her.

“No.”

“You came in here pretending to be a temporary worker.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted to catch me.”

“No.”

Celeste stepped closer.

“I wanted to see how you treated someone you believed had no power.”

Rochelle's eyes flickered.

“You didn't know who I was.”

“That isn't the point.”

Celeste's voice remained calm.

“You should not need to know someone's title before deciding whether they deserve basic dignity.”

Nobody spoke.

Celeste turned toward the workers.

“What is your name?”

The older maintenance worker near the sink looked startled.

“Henry Cole.”

“How long have you worked here, Mr. Cole?”

“Thirteen years.”

Celeste nodded.

“Is this normal?”

Rochelle immediately snapped.

“Henry.”

Celeste raised one hand.

“Let him answer.”

Henry looked at Rochelle.

Then Elliot.

Then the workers.

His hands trembled slightly.

“No, ma'am.”

Rochelle stared at him.

Henry swallowed.

“This is normal.”

The sentence seemed to unlock something.

Tanya spoke next.

“She changes people's schedules if they complain.”

Mateo raised his taped wrist.

“She made me unload Dock Two after I filed an injury report.”
