Richard Voss discussing stolen charity money.

He wasn't alone.

Several local officials were involved.

The evidence was devastating.

But there was something else.

A recording of Daniel.

His voice was weak.

He sounded tired.

But he was clear.

"If you're hearing this, I'm probably gone."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

"I need you to know something. I never wanted Evelyn involved. She deserves a life without this."

A pause.

Then his voice became stronger.

"But if you're hearing this because someone found the motorcycle, then they've already come too close."

Evelyn began crying.

Daniel continued.

"The motorcycle was never the secret."

Marcus looked confused.

Then the recording continued.

"The secret is who I trusted."

Silence.

Then a name.

"Marcus Hale."

Marcus froze.

Evelyn looked at him.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Marcus whispered:

"That's not possible."

Rebecca stared at him.

"Daniel trusted you."

"I know."

"Then why would he say—"

"I don't know."

Evelyn looked between them.

Her mind raced.

Could Marcus have betrayed Daniel?

Could he have been involved?

Had she trusted the wrong man for six years?

Marcus stood.

"I need to go."

Evelyn didn't stop him.

He walked outside.

She followed.

"Marcus."

He stopped.

"Did you know?"

He turned.

"Know what?"

"That Daniel suspected you?"

His face collapsed.

"No."

"Then why did he say your name?"

Marcus looked toward the road.

"I don't know."

Evelyn's voice hardened.

"Tell me the truth."

"I am."

"How can I believe you?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Because if I had betrayed Daniel, I wouldn't have kept that envelope for six years."

Evelyn said nothing.

Marcus continued.

"I loved your husband."

"I know."

"No, Evelyn. You don't."

He wiped his eyes.

"Daniel saved my life overseas."

Evelyn stared.

"What?"

"I was injured during a convoy attack. Daniel went back for me."

Marcus's voice broke.

"He carried me almost half a mile while bullets were hitting the road around us."

Evelyn listened.

"I owed him my life."

He looked toward the garage.

"I would never have betrayed him."

"Then who did he mean?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I don't know."

That night, Evelyn barely slept.

At 2:17 a.m., her phone rang.

It was Rebecca.

"Turn on the television."

Evelyn did.

Breaking news filled the screen.

A local warehouse had been destroyed by fire.

The warehouse belonged to Richard Voss.

Rebecca spoke.

"The police found someone inside."

"Who?"

"Samuel Crane."

Evelyn sat down.

"Is he alive?"

"No."

The room became silent.

Then Rebecca said:

"Evelyn, listen carefully."

"What?"

"The police believe the fire was deliberate."

Evelyn looked toward the garage.

Her Harley was still there.

Someone had already tried to damage it.

Someone had been searching for Daniel's evidence.

And now someone was eliminating witnesses.

Rebecca continued.

"Whatever Daniel discovered, people are willing to kill for it."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Then she remembered the note.

Don't let fear win.

She opened them again.

"I'm not afraid."

Rebecca paused.

"I know."

Evelyn stood.

"Then let's finish what Daniel started."

The Men Who Came Looking

Three days later, Evelyn heard a vehicle outside her house.

It was 11:38 at night.

She looked through the curtain.

A black SUV sat across the street.

Engine running.

Lights off.

She called Marcus.

No answer.

She called Rebecca.

Straight to voicemail.

The SUV remained there.

Then another vehicle arrived.

A white van.

Two men got out.

Evelyn's heart began beating faster.

She didn't panic.

She remembered Daniel's lessons.

Always know the exits.

Always know where your phone is.

Never assume someone is bluffing.

She grabbed her jacket.

Then she went into the garage.

The Harley stood beneath the lights.

Evelyn touched the fuel tank.

"I guess we're riding tonight."

She opened the garage door.

The men across the street noticed.

The Harley roared to life.

Evelyn backed out.

The SUV started moving.

She accelerated.

She didn't know where she was going.

Only that she needed distance.

The SUV followed.

Evelyn took the highway.

The motorcycle handled beautifully.

The damaged parts rattled.

The bent handlebar made steering difficult.

But the Harley kept moving.

She remembered the roads Daniel had taught her.

She remembered the first time she had ridden alone.

She remembered being terrified.

Then she remembered his voice.

Don't let fear win.

She took an exit.

The SUV followed.

Then another.

Finally, she saw headlights behind her.

A motorcycle.

Marcus.

He pulled alongside.

Evelyn nearly cried from relief.

He gestured toward a side road.

She followed.

They disappeared into an old industrial district.

Marcus led her to a mechanic's shop.

Inside were several motorcycles.

The doors closed behind them.

Marcus removed his helmet.

"You okay?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Who were they?"

"Voss's people."

"How do you know?"

Marcus pointed toward the SUV.

"I recognized the driver."

"Who?"

"Frank Delaney."

"Who is he?"

"Voss's security chief."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Then we need to end this."

Marcus nodded.

"We do."

Rebecca finally arrived.
