"Why damage my bike?"
Marcus tapped another page.
"Because somebody saw you talking to Rick."
"That's all?"
"No."
He slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Colton Briggs talking to a man outside an auto shop.
Evelyn recognized the man.
"That's Daniel's old friend."
Marcus nodded.
"His name is Samuel Price."
"Sam died three years ago."
"I know."
Evelyn stared at the photograph.
"Then who is the man beside him?"
Marcus leaned forward.
"That's why I called you."
The man was named Victor Crane.
Former owner of a towing company.
According to the documents, Crane had been connected to several shell companies.
Money had moved through them.
The amounts weren't enormous individually.
But together, they formed a pattern.
Evelyn frowned.
"Why would Daniel have anything to do with this?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Maybe he didn't."
"What does that mean?"
"Maybe someone is using his name."
Evelyn closed the folder.
"Then I want to know why."
Marcus nodded.
"There's one person who may know."
"Who?"
"Daniel's former business partner."
Evelyn froze.
"Daniel never had a business partner."
Marcus looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
She stared at him.
"Daniel told me everything."
Marcus's expression softened.
"Then somebody lied to one of you."
The Garage Daniel Never Mentioned
The address led them thirty miles outside town.
A weathered building stood behind a chain-link fence.
The sign above the door read:
HART & PRICE MOTOR WORKS
Evelyn stopped walking.
Her face went pale.
She had never seen it.
Marcus unlocked the gate with a key.
"How did you get that?"
"Sam's daughter gave it to me."
Inside, dust covered everything.
Old tools.
Rusty shelves.
Boxes.
A workbench.
On the wall hung photographs of Daniel.
Evelyn touched one.
Daniel was younger.
Smiling.
Holding a motorcycle engine.
She stepped backward.
"He never told me."
Marcus didn't answer.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"He didn't want you involved."
Evelyn turned.
An elderly man stepped forward.
Seventy-four.
Thin.
White hair.
His name was Samuel Price's brother, Arthur.
"You knew Daniel?"
Arthur nodded.
"He was my best friend."
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because he wanted you safe."
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"Safe from what?"
Arthur sighed.
"Victor Crane."
He explained that Daniel and Sam had discovered a fraudulent network involving stolen motorcycles and illegal vehicle identification numbers.
They had started documenting everything.
They planned to take the evidence to authorities.
But before they could, Sam was threatened.
Daniel refused to stop.
Then Daniel became sick.
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
"Your husband was dying, but he never stopped."
"Why?"
"Because he knew what would happen if they got away with it."
Evelyn looked around the garage.
"Where is the evidence?"
Arthur pointed toward an old metal cabinet.
"Daniel hid it."
Marcus opened the cabinet.
Inside was a small black case.
The lock was broken.
There were photographs.
Documents.
USB drives.
And one handwritten note.
Evelyn recognized the handwriting immediately.
She picked it up.
If anything happens to me, give this to Evelyn.
Her hands shook.
Marcus looked at her.
"There's something else."
He opened another file.
Inside was a photograph of Daniel standing beside the Harley.
On the back was written:
Vehicle 17 — evidence transfer.
Evelyn looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Arthur's face became serious.
"That motorcycle wasn't just Daniel's."
She stared at him.
"What are you saying?"
Arthur pointed toward the Harley's photograph.
"Daniel used it to transport the original evidence."
The room went silent.
The old motorcycle in Evelyn's garage wasn't merely a memory.
It had been part of Daniel's final investigation.
And someone had just damaged it six years later.
Which meant somebody still cared about what Daniel had hidden.
The Secret in the Saddlebags
They returned to Evelyn's house.
Marcus removed the damaged saddlebags.
One had been kicked hard enough to crack the leather.
Inside, beneath the lining, he found a metal plate.
He looked at Evelyn.
"Did you know this was here?"
"No."
He removed four screws.
A thin compartment opened.
Inside was a sealed plastic packet.
Evelyn stared.
Marcus pulled it out.
There was a small flash drive.
And a photograph.
Daniel.
Sam.
And a third man.
Evelyn recognized him immediately.
"Victor Crane."
Marcus nodded.
On the back of the photograph were three words.
Trust nobody.
Marcus connected the flash drive to his laptop.
Folders appeared.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Videos.
Names.
Dozens of them.
Then one file appeared.
HART_FINAL
Evelyn couldn't breathe.
Marcus opened it.
Daniel's face appeared on screen.
He looked sick.
Much thinner than Evelyn remembered.
But his eyes were steady.
"If you're watching this, Evelyn, then something went wrong."
She covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
"I need you to understand something. None of this was your fault."
His voice cracked.
"I wanted to tell you. Every day."
Evelyn whispered, "Daniel."
"But the more you knew, the more danger you were in."
The video continued.
"I hid everything in the motorcycle because nobody would think to look there."
He smiled faintly.
"You always told me the bike was just an expensive toy."
Evelyn laughed through tears.
