His shoulder drove into her center.
For half a second, the entire room expected Rachel to be lifted or driven backward.
Instead, she moved with him.
Not against him.
With him.
Mason felt something strange.
He had expected resistance.
Instead, Rachel's body seemed to disappear from the line of pressure.
His momentum continued forward.
Her right foot stepped outside his.
Her hip turned.
Her left hand redirected his shoulder.
Mason's balance shifted.
He reacted immediately.
He planted his foot.
Recovered his base.
Tried to turn the corner.
Rachel was already there.
She hooked his leg.
Mason dropped his weight.
Rachel dropped lower.
Suddenly he was on the mat.
Not pinned.
Not thrown dramatically.
Just placed there.
Mason's instincts took over.
He tried to pass.
Rachel framed against his shoulder.
He tried to drive forward.
She changed angles.
He attempted to trap her leg.
She withdrew it.
The clock was moving.
Eight seconds.
Ten.
Mason was getting frustrated.
He increased pressure.
Rachel allowed it.
Then she moved.
Her legs wrapped around one of his arms.
Mason recognized the danger.
Armbar.
He pulled his elbow back.
But Rachel had already shifted.
Her legs tightened.
His elbow was trapped.
Mason rolled.
Rachel followed.
He rolled again.
She followed again.
The students were beginning to realize what was happening.
Mason wasn't escaping.
He was being guided.
Every escape attempt took him deeper into the next position.
Rachel didn't seem rushed.
At seventeen seconds, Mason found himself flat on his back.
Rachel controlled his arm.
His elbow was extended.
He had one second to decide.
He tapped.
The room exploded.
“WHAT?”
Someone actually shouted.
Samuel stopped the timer.
Seventeen seconds.
Rachel released Mason.
He sat up slowly.
His chest rose and fell.
He stared at her.
“You knew exactly what I was doing.”
Rachel nodded.
“You're a wrestler.”
Mason frowned.
“How did you know?”
“You lead with your hips.”
“That doesn't explain everything.”
“No.”
Rachel stood.
“You also never stop moving forward.”
Mason looked at her.
For the first time, he wasn't angry.
He was curious.
Trevor, however, looked furious.
“Again.”
Samuel immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Trevor turned.
“What?”
“The round is over.”
“She caught both of us with the same kind of trick.”
Rachel looked at him.
“It wasn't the same.”
Trevor's face tightened.
Luke stepped onto the mat.
“I'm next.”
Trevor looked at him.
“You're sure?”
Luke smiled.
“Very.”
Luke was different from Trevor and Mason.
He didn't rely on strength.
He didn't rely on pressure.
He relied on confusion.
His favorite positions were the ones nobody else liked.
Inversions.
Leg entanglements.
Scrambles.
Unusual transitions.
He had won tournaments by making opponents believe they were safe.
Luke stretched his neck.
“Twenty seconds.”
Rachel nodded.
“You're faster than them.”
Luke smiled.
“You noticed.”
“Yes.”
“That's good.”
“Not necessarily.”
Luke laughed.
For the first time that evening, Rachel smiled.
“Ready?” Samuel asked.
Luke nodded.
Rachel raised her hands.
The timer started.
Luke exploded forward.
He feinted high.
Changed levels.
Reached for Rachel's leg.
She withdrew.
He switched directions.
Rachel followed.
Luke attempted a quick ankle pick.
She stepped over it.
He grabbed her sleeve.
She rotated.
He tried to enter a leg position.
Rachel recognized it instantly.
Her knee turned outward.
Luke abandoned the entry.
He moved behind her.
Rachel pivoted.
The students began whispering.
Neither fighter was committing.
They were reading each other.
Four seconds.
Six.
Eight.
Luke attacked again.
Rachel countered.
Luke attempted a sweep.
Rachel posted.
Luke switched to an arm.
Rachel moved her elbow.
Luke smiled.
“Interesting.”
Rachel didn't answer.
He attacked faster.
Rachel moved faster.
Then, suddenly, Luke found what he wanted.
He caught Rachel's wrist.
His legs wrapped around her arm.
He began setting up a submission.
The students recognized the position.
Luke had caught it.
Or so they thought.
Rachel looked down.
Then at Luke.
“Is that what you want?”
Luke grinned.
“Exactly.”
Rachel relaxed her arm.
Luke pulled.
And immediately realized the mistake.
She had given him the position deliberately.
Rachel rotated her shoulder.
Her arm slipped free.
Before Luke could recover, her hand controlled his wrist.
Her knee crossed his center.
She moved behind his shoulder.
Luke tried to roll.
Rachel followed.
He tried to invert.
She blocked the rotation.
He tried to sit up.
She redirected his head.
The entire sequence happened in less than three seconds.
Then Rachel's legs locked around his upper body.
Her arm wrapped around his neck.
