To Tyler’s left was Ryan Cole. Ryan was thirty, dark-haired, quiet, and possessed a long, lanky six-foot-two frame that made his black belt guard game a nightmare for anyone who stepped onto the mat with him. Unlike Tyler, who thrived on crowd noise and dramatic finishes, Ryan was a silent tactician. He didn't smile, he didn't talk trash, and he treated every match like a complex chess problem to be solved with minimal expenditure of energy.

The three of them had just finished an intense, thirty-minute competition training session in the back room and were now standing at the edge of the main floor, watching the open mat play out before them like experienced generals observing a casual training exercise.

“Who’s the new girl with Emily?” Marcus asked, taking a long drink from his metal water bottle, his voice deep and raspy.

Tyler glanced over, his eyes lingering on Naomi as Emily attempted another heavy guard pass, only to have Naomi smoothly hip-escape and reset her guard without apparent effort. “Don't know. Walked in off the street about twenty minutes ago. Emily took her down in three seconds.”

“She’s not fighting back,” Ryan said quietly, his dark eyes fixed on the fluid, circular way Naomi’s hips moved beneath Emily’s heavy pressure. “Look at her feet.”

Tyler snorted, stretching his shoulders back until his chest expanded beneath his gi. “She’s not fighting back because she can’t, Ryan. She’s tiny. Emily’s going to catch her with an armbar in about thirty seconds if she keeps letting her pass.”

“She’s not letting her pass,” Ryan observed, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. “She’s giving her the space so she doesn't have to carry her weight.”

Tyler rolled his eyes, adjusting the belt around his waist. He was in a remarkably good mood, feeling the intoxicating buzz of peak physical condition, his body fully warmed up and aching for a real challenge. He looked around the room, seeing the usual collection of hobbyists, blue belts, and winded white belts, and felt a sudden, familiar itch of boredom. He liked energy; he liked stakes; he liked the sharp, electric feeling of being the undisputed focal point of the room.

As the five-minute horn sounded, ending the round, Emily and Naomi bowed to each other. Emily was breathing heavily, her face flushed red, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of her sleeve. “Great round,” Emily said, her tone carrying a newfound edge of cautious respect. “You’re... really slippery.”

“Thank you,” Naomi said, her voice completely smooth, her heart rate hovering in a calm, steady rhythm. “You have very strong pressure.”

She stood up, walked to the edge of the mat, and grabbed a small sip of water from a plastic bottle she had left near her bag. As she turned back around, she found Tyler Grant stepping onto the mat, his hands resting on his hips, a smirk playing across his handsome, confident face. Behind him, Marcus and Ryan followed, their imposing physical presence immediately drawing the eyes of every spectator in the vicinity. Within seconds, the surrounding conversations began to die down as students noticed the academy's three top competitors converging on the small, unknown visitor.

“Hey,” Tyler called out, his voice easily carrying across the open space. “Looks like you’re looking for a real round.”

Naomi set her water bottle down and looked up at him. She didn't flinch, didn't shift her weight, and didn't look away from his gaze. “I’m just here to train.”

Tyler stepped closer, stopping ten feet away, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow across the grey mat. Marcus stood slightly to his left, his thick arms crossed over his chest like concrete pillars, while Ryan remained three steps back, his hands tucked loosely into the belt of his gi, watching Naomi’s eyes with quiet intensity.

“We saw you rolling with Emily,” Tyler said, his tone dripping with an easy, patronizing charm that was designed to sound friendly while establishing absolute hierarchy. “You’ve got some movement, but you’re playing very defensive. In this gym, we like to push the pace. You wanted a hard round? We’ll give you one.” He pointed his index finger across the mat with deliberate flair. “Pick one.”

He pointed first to himself, thrusting his thumb into his chest. “Me.”

Then to Marcus Bell. “Marcus.”

Then to Ryan Cole. “Or Ryan.”

The room went almost completely quiet. Three black belts. Three tournament champions. Three men who had spent years becoming the kind of elite, imposing athletes that new students watched with awe from the edge of the room. They represented the peak of Harbor Point’s physical capability—speed, crushing weight, and technical precision.

“You get to choose who breaks you in,” Tyler added with a light chuckle, looking around to ensure the surrounding students were paying attention to his generous offer.

Naomi Carter stood in her plain gray rash guard and black pants, looking at the three men lined up before her. She didn't look intimidated, nor did she look offended. Her expression was that of an engineer looking at a mechanical diagram, evaluating vectors, mass, and spatial distance.

“Those are the choices?” Naomi asked softly.

“Yeah,” Tyler smiled.

“Separate matches?”

“That’s usually how this works,” Tyler said, spreading his hands as if explaining a basic rule of arithmetic to a child.

Marcus let out a deep, gravelly laugh from his throat, amused by the absurdity of a one-hundred-twenty-five-pound woman taking time to consider which of them would flatten her first. Ryan, however, did not laugh. His eyes narrowed slightly as he watched Naomi’s posture; she hadn't shifted her feet or crossed her arms in defense. She was completely, totally relaxed.
