right cross while driving his right palm straight up into the base of Trent's chin.

*THUD.*

The open-palm strike—a classic military combatives technique designed to rattle the brain stem—

impacted with terrifying force.

Trent's head snapped back violently. His eyes rolled up for a fraction of a second as a bright flash of

white light exploded behind his retinas. The force lifted him off his feet, sending him staggering

backward three paces, his teeth clicking together with a sharp metallic sound.

Before Trent could recover his balance or regain his breath, Dean closed the distance with terrifying

speed.

He didn't throw a point-fighting kick. He drove a heavy, steel-toed work boot directly into the inside

of Trent's lead knee joint.

*CRACK.*

The joint hyper-extended inward. The medial collateral ligament stretched to its absolute limit,

emitting a wet popping sound.

Trent let out a sharp, agonizing shriek—a sound completely alien to the dojo—and collapsed to his

good knee on the mat.

"Trent!" Marcus yelled from the sidelines, taking a step forward in sheer panic.

Dean didn't even look back at Marcus. Without breaking eye contact with Trent, Dean raised his

hand, pointing a single finger at the two assistants.

"Stay where you are," Dean said. The command was not shouted; it was delivered with such

absolute, cold lethality that both black belts froze dead in their tracks, their instincts overruling their

training.

Trent was on his knee, gasping for air, clutching his injured joint. Sweat was pouring down his face,

his cocky posture completely shattered.

"You... you dirty fighter..." Trent wheezed, spit flying from his lips as he looked up with a mixture of

rage and burgeoning terror. "That's illegal! You can't target joints!"

Dean stood over him, looking down with the precise, detached gaze of a surgeon inspecting an

incision.

"This isn't a tournament, Trent," Dean said quietly. "There are no points here. There is no referee.

There is no bell."

rent's survival instincts, honed by years of competitive sparring, kicked in. He knew he was in

extreme danger. Abandoning all sportsmanship, he lunged from his kneeling position, wrapping

his heavy arms around Dean's waist in a desperate double-leg takedown attempt.

He intended to slam the older man into the hard mat, use his superior weight, and crush him with

ground-and-pound tactics.

Dean didn't panic. He didn't fight the momentum.

As Trent drove forward, Dean sprawled his legs back, putting his entire body weight directly onto

the back of Trent's neck. He wrapped his left arm around Trent's neck in a tight, vice-like headlock,

while his right hand seized Trent's left wrist.

With a swift, practiced twist of his hips, Dean leveraged Trent's momentum against him, rolling the

younger, heavier man onto his back and instantly securing a dominant mounting position on top of

Trent's chest.

Trent struggled wildly, bucking his hips and flailing his arms, trying to escape.

Dean remained completely immovable, his hips pinned to Trent's pelvis, locking Trent's left arm in a

brutal straight armbar position.

"Tap! Tap out!" Trent gasped, frantically slapping his right hand against the vinyl mat. "I tap out!

Stop!"

Dean did not release the pressure. He didn't tighten it to break the joint yet either; he simply

maintained the precise amount of force required to keep Trent entirely immobilized and in agonizing

pain.

"When my son was on this mat thirty minutes ago," Dean said, his voice dropping into a whisper

that only Trent could hear, "he was bleeding. He was defenseless. Did you stop when he dropped his

guard?"

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Trent cried out, the bravado completely stripped away, leaving only a

frightened young man whimpering on the floor.

"You told him that the street doesn't care if you're tired," Dean continued relentlessly. "You told him

that blood washes out, but pain leaves a lesson. So tell me, Trent... what lesson are you learning right

now?"

"Please..." Trent sobbed, tears cutting clean channels through the sweat and floor dust on his cheeks.

"Please don't break my arm."

From the edge of the mat, Brody—the taller of the two assistant instructors—seemed to snap out of

his shock. Emboldened by his boss's desperate cries, Brody grabbed a heavy wooden training bokken

(sword) resting on a wall rack and sprinted toward Dean's flank.

"Get off him!" Brody screamed, raising the heavy wooden weapon over his head.

Dean didn't even turn his torso.

With the fluid, subconscious awareness of a veteran who had fought multiple adversaries in tight

quarters, Dean released Trent's arm, executed a sharp hip-pivot on the mat, and swept his leg out in a

low spinning sweep.

The heavy leather boot caught Brody squarely across the shins mid-stride.

Brody went airborne, flipping completely upside down before crashing shoulder-first into the

hardwood floor off the edge of the mat. The wooden sword clattered uselessly across the room. Brody

groaned loudly, clutching his dislocated collarbone, completely eliminated from the fight.

Marcus, standing near the desk, took one look at Brody writhing on the floor, looked back at Dean's

cold, dead eyes, and slowly raised both hands into the air, stepping backward until his back hit the wall.

"I'm... I'm out, man," Marcus stammered, shaking his head frantically. "I have nothing to do with

this. I swear."

and calm.

Trent remained on his knees, holding his hyper-extended leg, coughing and clutching his
