The lieutenant turned sharply.

“Sergeant.”

The judge stopped.

Then she slowly faced him.

“No.”

Her answer surprised him.

“I'm going to do exactly what you apparently failed to do.”

“What?”

“Follow procedure.”

She put on her gloves.

The lieutenant asked:

“Are you still presiding over the hearing?”

The judge paused.

That was the important question.

The case scheduled for eleven concerned the sheriff's department.

Now she had personally experienced questionable conduct by members of that department.

She could not simply walk into court and pretend nothing had happened.

“I will notify the chief judge immediately.”

The sergeant's confidence returned.

“So you're recusing.”

The judge looked at him.

“Potentially.”

His confidence rose another inch.

Then she continued.

“But recusal doesn't erase what happened here.”

His smile disappeared.

Evidence

The judge mounted the Ducati.

Before starting the engine, she looked toward the lieutenant.

“Preserve every body-camera recording.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“Dispatch audio.”

“Yes.”

“Checkpoint logs.”

“Yes.”

“And the footage from every cruiser facing this location.”

The lieutenant nodded.

The senior deputy interrupted.

“This is ridiculous.”

The judge turned her helmet toward him.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“This is evidence.”

Then she started the Ducati.

The engine roared.

She accelerated away.

The senior deputy stood beside the checkpoint watching the red motorcycle disappear down the highway.

For the first time that morning, he seemed to understand the size of the mistake he had made.

But the real consequences had not even begun.

The Courtroom

Forty-two minutes later, the federal courtroom was packed.

County attorneys occupied one table.

Civil-rights attorneys occupied the other.

Several sheriff's administrators sat behind them.

Everyone expected the judge to enter at eleven.

Instead, the chief judge appeared.

Conversations stopped.

He took the bench.

“This court has been informed of an incident occurring this morning involving the judicial officer originally assigned to this matter.”

The sheriff leaned toward county counsel.

The chief judge continued.

“Because the incident directly involved members of the defendant department, the assigned judge has requested temporary reassignment to eliminate any appearance of personal influence.”

The senior county attorney looked pale.

Nobody knew the details yet.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

The lieutenant entered.

Behind her came the younger deputy.

Then the senior deputy.

All three had been ordered to appear by county counsel after an emergency call from command staff.

The sergeant stopped when he saw the courtroom.

Then he saw her.

The woman from the highway sat quietly behind the rail in a charcoal business suit.
