Wallace Jenkins was a twenty-seven-year court veteran whose reputation depended entirely on who you asked. To the older white judges, he was a reliable, friendly face. But to Black defense attorneys, young public defenders, and immigrant court translators, Wallace was notorious for inventing excuses to strip-search bags, delay entry, and subject minority legal workers to humiliating secondary screenings.

When Claudia approached the metal detector, she offered a polite, professional smile. "Good morning."

Wallace didn't return the greeting. His eyes dragged slowly over her charcoal suit, her long silver-streaked braids, and the black fabric draped over her arm.

"Place everything on the belt," Wallace grunted coldly.

Claudia set down her briefcase and robe. As she stepped through the frame, the metal detector emitted a soft, high-pitched beep. She stopped immediately. "My official judicial credentials and federal ID are in the front zipper pocket of my briefcase," she stated clearly.

Wallace smiled without a shred of warmth. "I didn't ask where they were. Step aside."

Before Claudia could reach for her briefcase, Officers Donnelly and Karns flanked her on either side. Donnelly eyed the black fabric on the belt with deep suspicion. "What’s that supposed to be?"

"That is my judicial robe," Claudia replied calmly. "I am Judge Claudia Hayes. I am scheduled to open Courtroom Four in twenty minutes."

Karns threw his head back and let out a loud, mocking laugh. "Your judicial robe? Right. And I'm the President of the United States."

Claudia didn't bat an eye. "Check the briefcase. My federal identification is right inside."

As Claudia made a calm, deliberate movement to open her bag, Donnelly lunged forward, grabbing her wrist in a vice-like grip and twisting her arm behind her back. "Keep your hands where I can see them!" he barked.

"Release me immediately," Claudia commanded, her voice ringing out across the lobby.

Several attorneys in line stopped in shock. A young defense lawyer took a step forward. "Hey! She said she’s a judge! Just check her bag!"

Donnelly snapped his head around, pointing a finger in the lawyer's face. "Back up before you join her in a cell!"

Claudia looked directly at Wallace Jenkins, who was standing back with his arms crossed. "Wallace. You know exactly who I am."

Wallace’s jaw tightened slightly, but his gaze remained cold and indifferent. "I know you're causing a public disturbance at a federal security checkpoint."

In that single, terrifying second, Claudia understood the sickening truth. Wallace didn't fail to recognize her. He knew precisely who she was. He was deliberately letting two rogue, indicted cops humiliate a federal judge because he believed their uniform gave them absolute, untouchable immunity.

The steel cuffs snapped tightly around Claudia’s wrists, biting deep into her skin as Donnelly and Karns shoved her through the heavy door marked SECURITY PERSONNEL ONLY. Wallace slipped inside right behind them, pulling the door shut until it clicked into place.

The windowless room smelled of stale coffee and industrial bleach. Donnelly shoved Claudia hard into the metal chair, while Karns tossed her folded robe onto the cluttered desk like a piece of trash.

"So, 'Your Honor,'" Karns sneered, leaning down until his face was inches from hers, "what court do you supposedly run?"

"The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania," Claudia said, her posture straight, her voice chillingly steady. "And you are currently committing multiple federal felonies."

Donnelly stepped up, standing over her threateningly. "You think sitting behind a desk makes you better than us? You think a piece of paper gives you the right to ruin hard-working cops?"

"I think the United States Constitution places limits on your power," Claudia replied. "Limits you have repeatedly and violently crossed."

"There it is," Karns gritted through his teeth, slamming his hands onto her shoulders. "That superior, arrogant attitude. You think you rule this city."

Donnelly walked over to a metal storage cabinet, pulled out a pair of heavy-duty electric hair clippers, and plugged them into the wall outlet. The motor roared to life with an aggressive, buzzing whine.

Claudia’s heart hammered, but she stared straight into Donnelly’s eyes. "Turn those off."

"Or what?" Donnelly smirked, taking a step toward her. "You gonna hold me in contempt?"

"You will lose your badge, your pension, and your freedom," Claudia warned, her tone deadly serious.

Karns dug his fingers deeper into her collarbone. "We run this court, lady. Not women like you."
