They cared about control.

Lena learned to breathe.

To wait.

To make opponents reveal themselves.

To stop chasing revenge.

Months passed.

Marcus disappeared from public view.

Then, unexpectedly, he returned.

He had been cleared of criminal charges.

The athletic commission had suspended him for six months.

But his career was not over.

His manager announced that Marcus would fight again.

And he wanted Lena.

A rematch.

The announcement shook the sports world.

Lena was asked repeatedly whether she would accept.

She refused to answer.

Then Marcus posted a message online.

"Everybody knows what happened last time. She got lucky."

Lena read it.

Then closed her phone.

Elias watched her.

"Don't respond."

"I wasn't going to."

"Good."

She trained.

Another month passed.

Then Lena finally accepted.

The rematch would happen in Chicago.

The same arena where everything had started.

But this time, there would be no anger.

No need to prove anything.

Only the fight.

The night before the rematch, Lena sat alone in the empty arena.

Elias found her there.

"You should be sleeping."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

She looked at the cage.

"Because tomorrow changes everything."

"No."

She looked at him.

"Tomorrow is just another day."

"What if I lose?"

"Then you lose."

"What if he hurts me?"

"He might."

"What if I freeze?"

"You might."

Lena frowned.

"You're terrible at encouragement."

Elias smiled.

"I'm teaching you something better."

"What?"

"Truth."

He sat beside her.

"Fear is not a prophecy."

Lena looked at him.

"It doesn't mean something bad will happen."

"It means you're aware something could happen."

She nodded.

"And then?"

"You prepare."

"Exactly."

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small photograph.

Lena took it.

It showed a little girl.

She was perhaps six years old.

Standing beside a young Mara.

And beside them stood Elias.

Lena stared.

"I've never seen this."

"I kept it."

"Why?"

"Because it was the happiest day of my life."

Lena looked at him.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"Why did Mom say you were never around?"

"Because I wasn't around enough."

She looked at the photograph again.

"Do you regret it?"

"Every day."

Lena folded the photograph carefully.

"Maybe you should tell her."

Elias looked toward the empty cage.

"Maybe."

The rematch began at nine o'clock.

The arena was full.

Marcus entered first.

He looked confident.

Lena entered second.

The crowd erupted.

Elias sat in the front row.

Mara was there too.

For the first time in decades, mother and father sat in the same room.

Neither spoke.

The bell rang.

Marcus attacked immediately.

Lena moved.

Not backward.

Sideways.

He swung.

She slipped.

He kicked.

She blocked.

He chased.

She waited.

The crowd became quieter.

Marcus grew frustrated.

He expected the same fighter from six months earlier.

The angry fighter.

The emotional fighter.

The woman who reacted.

She was gone.

Lena was patient.

Calculated.

Cold.

But not cruel.

Round after round, Marcus became more desperate.

By the fifth, he was breathing heavily.

By the sixth, Lena was controlling the pace.

Then Marcus landed a hard shot.

Lena stumbled.

The crowd roared.

Marcus smiled.

"There she is."

Lena looked at him.

For half a second, the old anger returned.

Then she remembered Elias.

You don't fight the person.

You fight the fight.

Lena breathed.

She raised her gloves.

And waited.

Marcus charged.

Lena stepped aside.

One punch.

Clean.

Marcus fell.

The arena exploded.

He stood before the count reached eight.

He came forward again.

Lena moved.

Another exchange.
