Several passengers jumped.

A bag had fallen.

A flight attendant hurried to secure it.

Then Richard suddenly stood.

"I'm getting off."

The cabin went silent.

Captain Hayes turned.

"Mr. Coleman, we are in the air."

"I know."

"Please return to your seat."

Richard's face had gone pale.

"I need to speak with the captain."

"You already did."

"No. Privately."

Captain Hayes approached.

"What is it?"

Richard looked at Selena.

Then at the other passengers.

Finally, he whispered:

"I think someone has been using my credentials."

Selena felt the entire cabin shift.

"What?"

Richard looked at her.

"I didn't send those messages."

Selena stared at him.

"Then who did?"

"I don't know."

"How did you know my name before I told you?"

He said nothing.

"Richard?"

He looked away.

Then he finally spoke.

"Because I was given a passenger profile."

The words hung in the air.

Captain Hayes's expression hardened.

"By whom?"

Richard swallowed.

"I can't tell you."

"Then we have a problem."

The aircraft continued flying above the clouds.

But now everyone in the cabin understood something.

This wasn't a simple dispute over a seat.

Someone had access to passenger information.

Someone had deliberately targeted Selena.

And Richard Coleman might not be the person behind it.

He might be the person being used.

The Evidence

The captain moved Richard to the forward galley under supervision.

Selena remained in her seat.

Evelyn stayed beside her.

For the first time, Selena felt the cabin united around a single question.

What was really happening?

Richard eventually agreed to explain.

He had been traveling to New York for a meeting with executives from Northstar Aviation Systems.

He admitted that before boarding, he had received an encrypted message from someone claiming to represent a senior Northstar executive.

The message contained a passenger profile.

It identified Selena.

It instructed Richard to sit in 12A.

Selena stared at him.

"Why?"

Richard shook his head.

"I wasn't told."

"You're telling me someone instructed you to take my seat?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I thought it was some kind of corporate security test."

"You thought a company executive would tell you to steal another passenger's seat?"

Richard looked ashamed.

"It wasn't presented that way."

"What was it presented as?"

"A compliance exercise."

Selena almost laughed.

"A compliance exercise?"

"I know how it sounds."

"It sounds ridiculous."

"I know."

Captain Hayes stepped forward.

"Did the message tell you anything else?"

Richard nodded.

"It said you might attempt to leave the aircraft."

Selena frowned.

"Leave the aircraft?"

"Yes."

"Why would I?"

"I don't know."

"What else?"

"It said that if you became confrontational, I should notify a specific number."

Captain Hayes asked:

"Did you?"

Richard hesitated.

"Yes."

The captain's face hardened.

"When?"

"After she asked me to move."

"Did you send any information?"

Richard nodded.

"Her name. Seat number. Boarding status."

Selena's stomach tightened.

"So you transmitted my information."

"I didn't know what it was for."

"You knew enough to do it."

Richard looked at the floor.

"You are right."

Selena leaned back.

For years, she had wanted people to understand that harm did not always arrive wearing a villain's face.

Sometimes it arrived disguised as procedure.

As policy.

As an innocent request.

As someone saying, I didn't know.

She looked at Richard.

"Who sent the message?"

He hesitated.

"Marcus Bell."

Selena recognized the name.

Marcus Bell was a senior executive at Northstar.

More importantly, he had publicly criticized BrightPath's new initiative.

Two weeks earlier, he had told a business journal that Selena's company was "using social politics to manipulate public education."

Selena had ignored the comment.

Now she wondered whether she should have paid more attention.

Captain Hayes contacted ground security.

Within minutes, the airline received new information.

The original security alert had not come from the national passenger screening system.

It had come from an internal contractor network.

Someone had entered Selena's name manually.

The alert was false.

The purpose was not to prevent a dangerous person from boarding.

The purpose was to create confusion.

Then the flight crew discovered something worse.

The system had been accessed using credentials belonging to Northstar Aviation Systems.

Richard stared at the captain.

"I told you."

Captain Hayes nodded.

"Your credentials were used."

"But I didn't access the system."

Selena asked:

"Can they prove that?"

"Yes," the captain replied. "Every access is logged."

Richard looked terrified.

"Then someone is framing me."

Selena looked at him.

"Possibly."

"But why?"

"Maybe because you're convenient."

Richard's face fell.

He understood.

If the plan failed, he would be blamed.

He was the man who had taken Selena's seat.

He had transmitted her passenger information.

He had access to the system.

The evidence would point directly toward him.

Selena looked out the window.

The clouds stretched endlessly beneath the aircraft.

Then her phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from Sean.

I found something.

Selena called him.

He answered immediately.

"Are you safe?"

"Yes."

"What did you find?"

"I searched Northstar's public records."

"And?"

"Marcus Bell is scheduled to speak at your conference tonight."

Selena frowned.

"I knew that."

"That's not all."

"What?"

"Northstar's contract with several school districts is being challenged by your new initiative."

"Yes."

"And the board of one of those districts is voting next week."

"Yes."

Sean paused.

"If BrightPath wins the vote, Northstar could lose a contract worth over four hundred million dollars."

Selena closed her eyes.

Now the pieces began connecting.

"This isn't about the conference," she said.

"What?"

"It's about the contracts."

"Exactly."

Then Sean said something that made her blood run cold.
