His son Ethan had grown up knowing that.
Teachers smiled at him.
Adults excused him.
Police officers looked the other way.
He was handsome, popular, captain of the football team, and protected by a father who seemed incapable of imagining his son doing anything wrong.
Hannah was different.
She was quiet.
She worked after school at her mother's diner.
She kept her grades high.
She stayed out of trouble.
And she tried very hard not to be noticed.
That was because Ethan Grayson had noticed her.
It started with small things.
A shoulder shoved into her in the hallway.
Her books knocked onto the floor.
Cruel notes in her locker.
Whispers behind her back.
Nothing serious enough for the adults to care.
Nothing obvious enough to prove.
So Hannah learned the rules.
Don't make eye contact.
Don't react.
Don't fight back.
Become invisible.
For three years, it almost worked.
Then Ethan walked into the Blake Diner one Tuesday afternoon.
And everything changed.
The Diner
Ethan entered with three friends, laughing loudly.
Hannah was behind the counter.
“Well, look who it is,” Ethan said.
She kept working.
“Four coffees.”
Hannah brought them over.
As she placed the final cup on the table, Ethan moved his leg.
The tray tipped.
Hot coffee spilled across his shirt.
The diner went silent.
“You did that on purpose.”
“I didn't.”
Ethan stood.
“You think you're better than me?”
“No.”
“You think your mother’s little diner is better than my family?”
Hannah stepped backward.
“I said I’m sorry.”
Ethan moved closer.
Then a voice came from the kitchen.
“That’s enough.”
Linda Blake stepped into the dining room.
She looked at Ethan.
Then at her daughter.
“Get out of my diner.”
Ethan laughed.
“You can't kick me out.”
“I can.”
“My dad is the sheriff.”
“I don't care if your father is the president.”
Linda stepped between them.
“You don't speak to my daughter that way.”
For the first time, Ethan's smile disappeared.
“You're going to regret this.”
Linda didn't move.
“Try me.”
Ethan left.
The door slammed behind him.
Hannah wanted to believe it was over.
But her mother knew better.
That night, Linda looked at her daughter.
“Baby, are you okay?”
Hannah forced a smile.
“I’m fine.”
She wasn't.
And somewhere across town, Ethan Grayson was already thinking about revenge.
The Warnings
Two days later, Linda found every window of her car smashed.
Across the driver's door, someone had spray-painted:
WATCH YOURSELF.
