By the time she reached the pool gate, she had convinced herself that the family inside wasn't just trespassing. They were dangerous. She remembered reading an article on Facebook about people breaking into vacation homes. Surely this was the same thing. They probably hopped the fence.

They were probably casing the place to rob the other guests. This narrative born entirely of prejudice and paranoia solidified into fact in her mind. She swiped her key card at the gate. The heavy iron gate clicked open. She walked past the main pool where families were splashing and playing.

She ignored them. She marched straight toward the velvet rope that separated the general public from the VIP section. The presidential cabana sat on a raised platform surrounded by white curtains and palm trees. It was a sanctuary. Or it was supposed to be.

Inside the cabana, Malik looked up from his iPad. He had headphones on listening to a lecture on constitutional law. He saw a woman approaching. She was walking fast, her phone held up in front of her face like a shield. Malik frowned.

He knew the look. He had seen it on viral videos a thousand times. He tapped his father's foot. Dad, Malik said quietly. We've got company.

Governor Vance looked up from his book. He lowered his reading glasses. He saw Ashley stopping at the velvet rope. She unhooked it herself, a violation of club rules, and stepped onto their private terrace. Can I help you, ma'am?

Governor Vance asked. His voice was polite, the deep baritone that had won him two elections. He didn't stand up. He didn't want to appear aggressive. He stayed seated trying to de-escalate before anything even started.

Ashley didn't answer him. She pointed her phone directly at his face. The sun glared off the lens. Are you a member here? She demanded.

Her voice was shrill, cutting through the peaceful sound of the waterfall nearby. Excuse me, Vance asked genuinely confused. I'm sorry, who are you? I'm a member, Ashley snapped. A platinum member, and I've never seen you before.

This area is restricted. It's $5,000 a day. I know you didn't pay that. The insult hung in the hot air. I know you didn't pay that.

It was a statement loaded with racial implication. Malik set his iPad down. He started to stand up, his protective instinct kicking in, but his father put a hand on his arm. Sit down, son. Don't give her what she wants.

Ma'am, Governor Vance said keeping his voice steady. My family and I are guests of the resort. We are trying to enjoy a quiet afternoon. I'm going to ask you to please respect our privacy and step back behind the rope. I'm not going anywhere until I see a key card, Ashley said.

She stepped closer invading their personal space. She panned her camera over to Elena who was waking up looking confused and frightened. Look at this. Ashley said to her phone. They're just sleeping here like they own the place.

Probably staff members using the facilities on break. This is what happens when you let standards drop. Elena sat up pulling her robe tight. Young lady, you are being incredibly rude. Please leave.

Rude? Ashley laughed. It was a harsh brittle sound. I'm protecting this community. You are the ones breaking the rules.

Show me a contract. Show me a receipt right now. I don't have to show you anything, Vance said firmly. I am not obligated to provide identification to a stranger with a cell phone. If you have a concern, you can call the manager.

His name is Mr. Henderson. He checked us in personally. I'm not calling Henderson, Ashley spat. He's probably in on it. I'm telling you to leave.

Get your stuff and get out or I'm calling security. Malik couldn't stay silent anymore. Ma'am, you are trespassing on our rental. You are harassing us. You need to back away.

Ashley's eyes lit up. She had been waiting for this. The threat thrilled her. She took a dramatic step back gasping loudly for her camera. Oh my god, did you hear that?

He just threatened me? He's coming at me? Malik hadn't moved an inch. He was sitting on the edge of the pool. But Ashley was crafting her scene.

She was directing a movie where she was the victim. "I feel unsafe. " She screamed, her voice echoing off the condo towers. "There are three of you and one of me. Stay back.

" Governor Vance closed his book. The peace was gone. He looked at this woman and saw the danger. He knew that in America, a screaming white woman and a black family was a recipe for tragedy. He needed to end this.

"Ma'am. " Vance said, his voice dropping to the command tone he used in the State House. "You are making a mistake. A very big mistake. I am asking you one last time to leave us alone.

" "Is that a threat? " Ashley shrieked. "You're threatening a woman. I'm calling the police. " She turned and ran.

She didn't just walk away. She ran back to the gate, creating a spectacle. She wanted witnesses to see her fleeing in terror. She wanted to set the stage. Governor Vance looked at his wife.

Elena was shaking. "Elias. " She whispered. "We should go. We should just leave.

" "No. " Vance said. "We have done nothing wrong. We are not running away. We paid for this. We are staying.

" He picked up his phone to text his security detail, but he had no signal in the cabana. The thick concrete walls of the resort blocked the reception. He sighed. "Malik, go to the front desk. Tell Henderson what happened.
