He said nothing.

But one person in the audience noticed something strange.

His name was Thomas Blake.

Forty-five years old.

Former Army military police.

Twenty years of service before a damaged knee ended his career.

Thomas trained at Titan Ground because it was the only local gym with decent equipment.

He did not particularly like Derek.

But he understood fighting.

And when Derek shoved Marcus, Thomas saw something almost everyone else missed.

Marcus had not stumbled naturally.

He shifted his weight.

Absorbed the force through his rear foot.

Redirected it.

Barely two inches of unnecessary movement.

Thomas leaned forward.

That was not luck.

That was training.

Serious training.

Thomas whispered:

“Oh, no.”

 The Challenge

Derek climbed back into the octagon and grabbed the microphone.

“All right. Final offer.”

He pointed toward Marcus.

“Twenty thousand dollars if this old man can last one round with me.”

The crowd erupted.

“Sixty seconds!”

“Let's go!”

“Fight!”

Marcus remained beside the front desk.

“I didn't come here to fight.”

“Oh, he talks!”

Laughter.

Derek stepped closer.

“You came into my house.”

He pointed around the gym.

“My house. And here, I decide who stays.”

Marcus watched him quietly.

“I'll leave.”

He turned.

Derek grabbed his shoulder and spun him around.

“I didn't say you could leave.”

For half a second, even the crowd went quiet.

Then someone started chanting.

“Fight!”

“Fight!”

“Fight!”

Others joined.

Derek could feel the momentum building.

This was exactly what he wanted.

A sixty-three-year-old stranger against the undefeated owner of Titan Ground.

The thumbnail alone would bring millions of impressions.

Derek grabbed a pair of training gloves and threw them at Marcus's feet.

“Put them on.”

Marcus looked down.

Then toward the crowd.

Hundreds of phones were aimed at him.

Not one person stepped forward to stop what was happening.

“I said I'm leaving.”

Derek kicked the gloves closer.

“What's wrong?”

He grinned.

“Scared?”

Then he shoved Marcus again.

This time it was lighter.

Designed for the camera.

Afterward, Derek reached up and patted Marcus twice on the head.

“Good boy.”

The gym howled.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

His breathing slowed.

His fingers curled.

But he did not swing.

Thomas Blake watched closely.

Marcus's feet remained shoulder-width apart.

Knees slightly bent.

Weight centered.

Hands relaxed.

Not tense.

Ready.

Thomas had seen that posture before.

Military combatives.

The kind of stance designed not to look threatening until the moment it mattered.

Thomas whispered:

“Oh, no.”

Derek heard him.

“What was that?”

Thomas shook his head.

“Nothing.”

Derek smiled.

“Exactly.”

He turned toward Marcus.

“You have ten seconds.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?”

Derek laughed.

“Why what?”

“Why are you doing this?”

The question caught Derek off guard.

“What?”

“You have a gym. You have money. You have people here.”

Marcus gestured around.

“So why do you need to humiliate somebody?”

The crowd became quieter.

Derek stared at him.

Then his face hardened.

“Because I can.”

Marcus nodded.

That answer told him everything.

He picked up the gloves.

Derek's smile returned.

“There we go.”

Marcus put them on.

The gym erupted.

But Thomas noticed something else.

Marcus wasn't stretching.

He wasn't bouncing.

He wasn't trying to intimidate anyone.

He was breathing.

Slowly.

Evenly.

As if he were preparing for something he had done thousands of times.

Derek suddenly felt less amused.

Still, he climbed into position.

The referee entered the cage.

The door closed.

Twenty thousand dollars sat on a table outside.

The cameras zoomed in.

Derek raised his gloves.

“Ready to embarrass yourself?”

Marcus looked at him.

“No.”

The referee looked between them.

“Ready?”

Marcus nodded.

The bell rang.

 Sixty Seconds

Derek came forward aggressively.

He expected Marcus to retreat.

Marcus did not.

He stepped half a pace to the side.

Derek's first punch passed in front of him.

The crowd gasped.

Derek turned.

Marcus was already somewhere else.

“What the—”

Derek swung again.

Marcus slipped.

Another miss.

The laughter disappeared.

Derek charged.

Marcus moved backward only when necessary.

No wasted motion.

No panic.

No wild swings.

Derek threw a combination.

Left.

Right.

Hook.

Marcus blocked the first.

Moved around the second.

Let the hook pass behind his shoulder.

Then he tapped Derek's chest.

Once.

Not hard.

Almost politely.

Derek froze.

The crowd reacted.

“OHHHH!”

Derek's face darkened.

He attacked harder.

Marcus continued moving.

Twenty seconds.

Thirty.

Derek landed a glancing shot against Marcus's shoulder.

Marcus absorbed it.

No expression.

No anger.

Derek swung again.

Marcus caught his wrist.

For the first time, the crowd became completely silent.

Marcus's grip was not dramatic.

It did not look powerful.

But Derek couldn't pull his arm away.

Marcus rotated his wrist.

Derek's shoulder twisted.

He stumbled.

Marcus released him immediately.

Derek stared.

Marcus said quietly:

“You're fast.”

Derek looked confused.

“That sounded like a compliment.”

“It was.”

Derek's face turned red.

He charged again.

Marcus stepped forward.

Not backward.

Forward.

Their bodies met.

Marcus shifted his hips.

Derek's balance disappeared.

The larger man fell.

The crowd exploded.

Derek rolled.

Marcus stepped away.

The referee stared.

Derek climbed to his feet.

He was breathing heavily now.
