“I know.”

“You have a doctor's appointment tomorrow.”

“I know.”

“And you still went into a cage with a two-hundred-forty-pound man.”

Marcus sighed.

“I didn't exactly plan it.”

Aaron walked into the garage.

“You looked different.”

Marcus became quiet.

“Different how?”

“Like the old you.”

Marcus looked down.

He had spent years trying to leave that man behind.

The Marine.

The instructor.

The man who had spent decades teaching young soldiers how to survive violent situations.

Helen had always told him that part of him would never disappear.

She had been right.

Aaron picked up one photograph.

It showed Marcus at twenty-nine, standing beside a group of Marines.

“You never told me about this.”

“Most things from that life didn't need telling.”

Aaron looked at him.

“Did you ever enjoy fighting?”

Marcus thought about it.

“No.”

“Then why were you good at it?”

“Because I respected it.”

He put the photograph down.

“Violence isn't a game.”

Aaron nodded.

“That Derek guy thinks it is.”

Marcus looked toward the garage door.

“That is what worries me.”

 Derek's Revenge

The following week, Derek announced another challenge.

This time, he doubled the prize.

“Forty thousand dollars.”

The announcement went viral.

But there was one difference.

The title of the livestream was:

REMATCH WITH THE OLD MAN.

Marcus watched the video once.

Then turned it off.

Thomas called him.

“You saw it?”

“Yes.”

“You going?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Thomas paused.

“He's furious.”

“I noticed.”

“He wants revenge.”

Marcus sighed.

“That is exactly why I'm not going.”

But Derek had no intention of accepting that answer.

He drove to Marcus's house.

He arrived late one afternoon.

Marcus was mowing the lawn.

Derek stepped out of his truck.

“You hiding?”

Marcus turned off the mower.

“No.”

“Then come fight me.”

Marcus looked at him.

“No.”

Derek laughed.

“You scared?”

“No.”

“Then why not?”

“Because I don't need to prove anything.”

Derek stepped closer.

“You made me look weak.”

Marcus nodded.

“You did that yourself.”

Derek's expression hardened.

He shoved Marcus.

Marcus didn't fall.

He barely moved.

Derek froze.

The difference was obvious now.

He had pushed Marcus before.

Marcus had moved because he allowed himself to.

This time he didn't.

Derek looked at him.

Marcus said quietly:

“Go home.”

Derek stared.

“You think you're better than me?”

“No.”

“Then what do you think?”

Marcus looked directly into his eyes.

“I think you are angry at the wrong person.”

Derek left.

But the cameras in his truck were still recording.

He had planned to provoke Marcus.

Instead, the footage showed something else.

A sixty-three-year-old man standing calmly while a younger, stronger man lost control.

The video went viral.

And for the first time, people began asking questions about Derek.

 Thirty-Two Stories

The questions became investigations.

Former fighters began speaking.

Employees began sharing stories.

The thirty-two challengers on Derek's wall suddenly became more than plaques.

They became names.

People found old videos.

They compared footage.

They noticed that Derek had repeatedly selected opponents with specific weaknesses.

They noticed unusual editing.

They noticed challengers who disappeared from Titan Ground afterward.

A local sports reporter contacted Thomas.

Then Chloe.

Then several former employees.

Eventually, someone contacted Marcus.

He refused an interview.

“Why?”

“Because this isn't my story.”

The reporter asked:

“Then whose is it?”

Marcus answered:

“The people who were afraid to speak.”

That sentence was quoted everywhere.

Within days, state athletic officials began reviewing Titan Ground's challenge events.

Sponsors paused their relationships with Derek.

A major equipment company announced it was investigating.

Derek's online audience began turning against him.

But the most important development happened inside the gym.

The members started demanding change.

Derek called a meeting.

Hundreds of people filled the training area.

He stood in front of them.

“This is my business.”

Nobody applauded.

A fighter near the back raised his hand.

“What about the contracts?”

Derek ignored him.

Another spoke.

“What about the banned members?”

Silence.

Then Chloe stepped forward.

“I have copies.”

Derek stared at her.

“Copies of what?”

“Everything.”

The room became silent.

She held up a folder.

“Complaints.”

Derek's face changed.

“You stole company property.”

“No.”

Chloe looked at the crowd.

“I kept evidence.”

Derek took a step toward her.

Thomas stepped between them.

“Don't.”

Derek looked around.

For the first time since opening Titan Ground, he realized something.

He was alone.

 Marcus Returns

Marcus returned to Titan Ground one final time.

Not for Derek.

For the members.

The gym was quiet.

The televisions had been turned off.

The cameras were gone.

The money table was empty.

Marcus walked onto the mat.

People moved aside.

Thomas approached.

“You really came.”

Marcus nodded.

“I heard there was a meeting.”

“There is.”

Marcus looked around.

Young fighters.

Older members.

Parents.

Coaches.

Employees.

People who had spent months afraid to speak.

Marcus stood in the center.

“I don't know what happens next.”

Nobody expected that answer.

He continued.

“I am not here to take Derek's place.”

A few people smiled.

“I am not here to own this gym.”

He looked around.

“I am here because fighting should teach discipline.”
