The Man Nobody Noticed
The parking lot behind Miller's Auto & Tire was almost empty when Daniel Mercer finished his last repair of the evening.
Rain had fallen earlier, leaving the asphalt dark and reflective beneath the orange security lights. The smell of gasoline, rubber, and wet concrete filled the air.
Daniel wiped his hands on an old blue shop towel.
He was forty-five years old.
His hair had begun turning gray around the temples, and there was a permanent stiffness in his right shoulder from an accident years ago. His work shirt was faded, his boots were scratched, and his hands looked like they belonged to a man who had spent his entire life fighting machinery instead of people.
Nobody at the garage knew much about Daniel.
He liked it that way.
He was quiet.
Reliable.
Always the first to arrive and usually the last to leave.
At six-thirty, he locked the garage and walked toward the bus stop across the street.
His daughter was waiting.
Sophie Mercer was thirteen.
She stood beneath the awning with a backpack hanging from one shoulder, staring at her phone.
When she saw her father, her expression immediately softened.
"You're late."
Daniel smiled.
"Seven minutes."
"That's late."
"Sorry."
"You owe me fries."
"That's fair."
They started walking toward the small diner two blocks away.
Daniel noticed something almost immediately.
Sophie wasn't talking.
Usually, she filled silence with stories about school, music, homework, or whatever strange thing she'd seen online.
Tonight she was quiet.
Daniel looked at her.
"Something happen?"
"No."
"That's your 'something happened' voice."
She sighed.
"Dad."
"Yeah?"
"Do you ever get tired of being poor?"
Daniel stopped walking.
Sophie immediately looked embarrassed.
"I didn't mean—"
"It's okay."
"No, I shouldn't have said it."
Daniel studied his daughter.
"Why are you asking?"
She looked down.
"There are some kids at school."
"What kids?"
"Just some guys."
"Names?"
"Dad."
"Names."
She hesitated.
"Ryan Cole. Travis Miller. Jason Ward."
Daniel remembered the names.
Not because he'd met them.
Because he had heard Sophie mention them before.
"They bothering you?"
"Not exactly."
"Then what?"
"They think I'm weird."
Daniel shrugged.
"Everybody thinks somebody is weird."
"They've been posting things about me."
His expression changed.
"What kind of things?"
"Pictures."
"What pictures?"
Sophie looked away.
"Nothing bad."
"Then why don't you want to tell me?"
She didn't answer.
Daniel stopped again.
"Sophie."
She finally looked up.
"They took pictures of me when I was eating lunch alone."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"And?"
"They made fun of my clothes."
Daniel glanced at her jacket.
It was old.
Clean.
But clearly several years old.
"They said I dress like a little kid."
Daniel looked at his daughter.
"You like that jacket?"
"Yeah."
"Then that's all that matters."
Sophie smiled weakly.
"I know."
They continued walking.
Neither noticed the black SUV parked across the street.
Inside were three teenagers.
Ryan Cole sat behind the wheel.
Travis was in the passenger seat.
Jason sat in the back.
They watched Daniel and Sophie approach the diner.
Ryan laughed.
"That's her dad?"
Travis nodded.
"That's him."
Jason leaned forward.
"He looks like a mechanic."
Ryan smirked.
"He is."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah."
The three laughed.
Ryan watched Daniel hold the diner door open for Sophie.
"She's always acting like she's better than us."
Travis shook his head.
"She isn't."
Ryan smiled.
"Maybe we should remind her."
Inside the diner, Daniel and Sophie sat in a booth.
Daniel ordered two burgers and fries.
Sophie finally began talking again.
She told him about a science project.
