Daniel stared.

"I thought you were retired."

"I am."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because someone is asking questions about you."

Daniel closed the garage door.

"Who?"

"Grant Cole."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"What does he want?"

"Something you took twenty years ago."

"I didn't take anything."

Elena looked at him.

"You know exactly what I'm talking about."

Daniel turned away.

Twenty years earlier, he had been part of a special operations team investigating an international smuggling network.

The operation had gone wrong.

His team discovered evidence that a powerful group was financing illegal weapons shipments.

One of the names connected to that operation had been Grant Cole.

Daniel had recovered a digital archive.

Before he could deliver it, his team was ambushed.

Three men died.

Daniel survived.

The evidence disappeared.

Daniel left the military shortly afterward.

He changed his identity.

Moved.

Built a quiet life.

Then Sophie was born.

He never looked back.

Until now.

Elena placed an envelope on the workbench.

"Open it."

Daniel did.

Inside was a photograph.

Grant Cole stood beside several men.

One of them was a man Daniel had believed dead.

Daniel's breathing stopped.

"That's impossible."

Elena nodded.

"I know."

"He's dead."

"Officially."

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"Where did you get this?"

"Three days ago."

"What does he want?"

Elena stared at him.

"The archive."

Daniel closed the envelope.

"I don't have it."

"That's not what they believe."

"They're wrong."

Elena lowered her voice.

"Daniel, someone has been tracking Sophie."

His expression changed.

"How close?"

"Close enough."

Daniel's fist tightened.

Elena noticed.

"Don't go back to who you were."

"I won't."

"You promised yourself."

"I remember."

"Then remember why."

Daniel looked toward the garage window.

Outside, Sophie was waiting in the car.

Elena followed his gaze.

"She's your weakness."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He looked at his daughter.

"She's my reason."

That evening, Daniel told Sophie they needed to leave town for a few days.

She asked why.

He said it was a work problem.

She knew he was lying.

"Dad."

"Yeah?"

"You don't have to protect me from everything."

"I know."

"Then tell me the truth."

Daniel looked at her.

She was thirteen.

But she wasn't a child anymore.

He sat down.

"I used to do dangerous work."

"What kind?"

"Military."

"Like a soldier?"

"Yes."

"Were you in fights?"

Daniel nodded.

"Did you hurt people?"

He hesitated.

"Sometimes."

Sophie looked frightened.

"Are you dangerous?"

Daniel's heart broke.

"No."

"But you just said—"

"I was trained to be dangerous."

He reached for her hand.

"But being able to hurt someone isn't the same as wanting to."

Sophie was silent.

"Did you kill anyone?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I've lost people."

"That's not what I asked."

"I know."

He looked at her.

"Yes."

Sophie pulled her hand away.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then she whispered:

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted you to know me as your father."

She looked at him.

"You're still my father."

"Yes."

"Then don't lie to me again."

Daniel nodded.

"I won't."

That night, someone fired a bullet through the kitchen window.

Nobody was injured.

But the message was clear.

The people from Daniel's past were no longer watching.

They were making their move.

 The Night Everything Broke

Daniel moved Sophie to a safe house outside the city.

Elena helped arrange it.

For two days, nothing happened.

Then the power went out.

Sophie looked up from her book.

"Dad?"

Daniel was already standing.

"Stay here."

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

He walked toward the window.

Outside, the road was dark.

Too dark.

The backup generator should have activated.

It hadn't.

Daniel whispered:

"They're here."

The first window shattered.
