His knuckles were thick and scarred.

His fingers were slightly crooked.

The cartilage around his ears was hardened.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Tom looked at his posture.

Arthur appeared relaxed.

Yet his feet were perfectly balanced beneath him.

His weight was centered.

His shoulders were loose.

Nothing about him looked accidental.

Tom had seen that posture before.

Usually on men who had spent decades learning not to waste movement.

“You've trained before?” Tom asked.

Arthur shrugged.

“A little.”

“How much is a little?”

Arthur smiled.

“Enough to know I don't remember as much as I used to.”

Tom laughed.

“Locker room is down the hall.”

Arthur nodded.

“Thank you.”

Ten minutes later, the old man stepped onto the mat.

He was wearing a faded judo gi top.

It was heavy and old-fashioned, the kind of thick canvas uniform that looked almost impossible to tear.

Around his waist was a white belt.

But it wasn't the crisp white belt of a beginner.

This one was yellowed.

Soft.

Frayed.

Ancient.

It looked like it had been washed a thousand times.

Arthur bowed toward the mat.

Then he began stretching.

Slowly.

Methodically.

Quietly.

Garrett noticed him.

He laughed.

“Hey, Tom.”

Tom didn't answer.

Garrett pointed.

“Since when did we start running a senior citizen program?”

A few students laughed nervously.

Tom's expression hardened.

“Leave him alone.”

Garrett ignored him.

He walked toward Arthur.

“Hey, pops.”

Arthur continued stretching.

“You lost?”

Arthur finished his movement before looking up.

“No.”

Garrett grinned.

“This isn't tai chi.”

“I know.”

“People get hurt here.”

Arthur smiled.

“Thanks for the warning.”

Garrett stared at him.

There was no fear.

No embarrassment.

No defensiveness.

That irritated him more than anything else could have.

“You want to roll?”

Tom stepped forward.

“Garrett.”

Arthur raised one hand.

“It's okay.”

Tom looked at him.

Arthur stood.

“I'll go light.”

Garrett smiled.

“Sure.”

He bounced on his toes.

“I'll go easy.”

Arthur looked at him for a moment.

Then nodded.

“That's kind of you.”

The gym grew quiet.

Everyone knew what was coming.

Or at least they thought they did.

Nobody knew that within five minutes, Garrett's understanding of strength would begin to collapse.

The Challenge

Tom stood at the edge of the mat.

“Five minutes,” he said. “Flow rolling.”

Garrett nodded.

“Got it.”

Tom stared at him.

“Technique. Not strength.”

Garrett sighed.

“I heard you.”

Arthur stepped forward.

The contrast between the two men was almost ridiculous.

Garrett was young, muscular, athletic, and visibly excited.

Arthur looked like someone's grandfather who had wandered into the wrong building.

They touched fists.

Garrett slapped Arthur's hand harder than necessary.

Arthur barely reacted.

The moment their hands separated, Garrett attacked.

He shot forward with explosive speed.

A double-leg takedown.

It was far too aggressive for a light roll.

Several students winced.

Arthur moved.

Not backward.

Sideways.

His lead foot pivoted.

His hips lowered.

One palm touched Garrett's shoulder.

That was all.

Garrett's momentum carried him past.

His hands grabbed nothing.

His chest hit the mat.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Garrett jumped up.

“What was that?”

Arthur shrugged.

“You moved quickly.”

A few people smiled.

Garrett's face tightened.

“Lucky.”

Arthur nodded.

“Maybe.”

Garrett circled.

This time he approached more carefully.

He grabbed Arthur's lapel.

Then the other.

He began pushing and pulling.

Garrett was trying to break Arthur's balance.

It should have worked.

Against someone older and smaller, his strength advantage should have been enormous.

But Arthur seemed to have no center to break.

When Garrett pushed, Arthur yielded.

When Garrett pulled, Arthur stepped in.

When Garrett tried to turn him, Arthur simply moved with him.

It was frustrating.

Like trying to wrestle water.

Garrett grabbed Arthur's wrist.

Arthur allowed it.

Then his fingers closed around Garrett's wrist.

Garrett's expression changed.

The old man's hand felt different.

There was no visible effort.

No dramatic squeezing.

But Garrett could not pull free.

He yanked.

Nothing.

He pulled harder.

Still nothing.

Arthur released him.

Garrett stumbled backward.

Arthur said nothing.

Garrett's breathing had changed.

“You've trained.”

Arthur smiled.

“A little.”

Garrett attacked again.

This time he reached for a collar tie.

Arthur stepped inside.

His left arm slipped beneath Garrett's armpit.

His head touched Garrett's chest.

Suddenly Garrett felt as though he had lost the ability to control his own body.

Arthur wasn't stronger.

He was simply perfectly positioned.

Garrett tried to shove him away.

Arthur remained.

Then Arthur swept his foot.

De ashi harai.

A basic judo foot sweep.

Garrett's foot disappeared from underneath him.

He crashed onto the mat.

The sound echoed.

Nobody laughed.

Garrett got up.

His face was red.

“You're not supposed to do that.”

Arthur tilted his head.

“Do what?”

Garrett said nothing.

He attacked again.

Arthur swept him.

Again.

This time Garrett caught himself.

His anger was growing.

Arthur noticed.

“Relax.”

Garrett glared.

“I'm relaxed.”

“No.”

Arthur's voice remained gentle.

“You're angry.”

Garrett rushed forward.

Arthur moved.

Garrett stumbled.

The old man caught his sleeve and redirected him.

Garrett recovered.

But the room had changed.

Everyone was watching.

And Garrett knew it.

That made everything worse.

He could feel their eyes.

The blue belts.
