The purple belts.

The beginners.

Liam.

Especially Liam.

Garrett had spent years teaching everyone in the gym that he was untouchable.

Now an old man in a faded gi was making him look confused.

Garrett stopped thinking.

He started fighting.

He drove forward.

Arthur absorbed the attack without resisting it directly.

A collar grip.

A wrist grip.

A turn.

A step.

Garrett's balance disappeared.

Arthur's hip came across.

For an instant, Garrett felt weightlessness.

Then he hit the mat.

Hard.

He rolled onto his side.

Arthur stood over him.

Not triumphantly.

Patiently.

Garrett stared up at him.

“How?”

Arthur extended a hand.

Garrett ignored it.

He stood by himself.

Arthur lowered his hand.

“Again?”

Garrett's eyes narrowed.

“Yeah.”

Tom stepped closer.

“Garrett, remember what I said.”

“I'm fine.”

Arthur looked at Tom.

Tom looked back.

There was concern in his eyes.

Arthur nodded.

“Light.”

Garrett didn't answer.

They started again.

For the next two minutes, Arthur controlled nearly everything.

He didn't dominate through speed.

He dominated through timing.

He never fought where Garrett was strongest.

He didn't meet strength with strength.

He redirected.

He waited.

He allowed Garrett to make mistakes.

And then he used those mistakes against him.

Finally, Garrett managed to secure top position.

He pressed Arthur down.

For the first time, Garrett smiled.

“There.”

Arthur looked up.

“Good.”

Garrett pushed harder.

Arthur's expression remained calm.

“Now breathe.”

Garrett laughed.

“I've got you.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

Then Arthur shifted his hips.

Garrett's balance disappeared.

In less than a second, Arthur reversed the position.

Garrett found himself on his back.

Arthur was already beside him.

Knee-on-belly.

Garrett tried to bridge.

Arthur rode the movement.

Garrett bridged again.

Arthur moved with him.

Every escape attempt created another opening.

Finally Garrett exploded upward.

Arthur caught his collar.

One hand.

Then the other.

Garrett realized what was happening.

A cross-collar choke.

He knew how to defend it.

He had taught it.

He had submitted dozens of people with it.

But Arthur's grip was perfect.

Garrett tried to strip the hands.

Couldn't.

He tried to turn.

Couldn't.

His breathing became difficult.

The room went silent.

Arthur leaned closer.

“Tap if you need to.”

Garrett refused.

His pride screamed louder than his lungs.

He fought harder.

Arthur's pressure remained constant.

No anger.

No cruelty.

Just control.

Garrett's vision began to narrow.

Then Arthur released him.

Immediately.

Garrett rolled away and coughed.

Arthur stood.

“Good round.”

Garrett stared at him.

“You let me go.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You were no longer learning anything.”

Garrett's jaw tightened.

“I wasn't done.”

Arthur nodded.

“That is exactly the problem.”

Garrett stood.

Something inside him had cracked.

But not enough.

Not yet.

When Anger Takes Over

The gym felt different now.

Nobody was talking.

Garrett could hear his own breathing.

He wiped sweat from his forehead.

Arthur stood calmly in front of him.

“You embarrassed me.”

Arthur looked confused.

“No.”

Garrett pointed at the mat.

“You made me look stupid.”

“I didn't do that.”

“You did.”

Arthur shook his head.

“You did that yourself.”

Several students looked away.

Tom closed his eyes briefly.

He knew where this was going.

Garrett had always been dangerous when embarrassed.

But this was different.

His pride had been challenged in front of everyone.

“Again,” Garrett said.

Arthur nodded.

“Okay.”

Tom stepped forward.

“Garrett, that's enough.”

“No.”

“Class is over for you.”

Garrett ignored him.

Arthur looked at Tom.

Then back at Garrett.

“You should listen to your coach.”

Garrett's expression hardened.

“I don't need another lecture.”

Then he attacked.

There was no technique.

No rhythm.

No restraint.

He lunged toward Arthur with a heavy collar tie, his forearm swinging toward the old man's neck.

Tom shouted.

“Garrett!”

Arthur stepped forward.

Not back.

Forward.

His hand caught Garrett's wrist.

His other hand framed against Garrett's shoulder.

Garrett's momentum stopped.

Arthur pivoted.

His leg entered between Garrett's legs.

His grip tightened around the collar.

For one impossible second, Garrett felt the floor disappear.

Arthur lifted.

Uchi mata.

Garrett rotated through the air.

Then landed on his back.

The impact knocked the breath from him.

Before he could recover, Arthur settled into control.

Knee-on-belly.

Garrett bridged violently.

Arthur rode the movement.

Garrett tried again.

Nothing.

He pushed against Arthur's leg.

Nothing.

He grabbed the old man's gi.

Nothing.

The harder Garrett fought, the more exhausted he became.

Arthur leaned slightly closer.

“Breathe.”

“Get off me.”

“Breathe.”

Garrett thrashed.

Arthur's weight remained centered.

“You're fighting the mat,” Arthur said quietly. “Not me.”

Garrett froze.

Something about those words struck him.

But his pride refused to listen.

He tried one final escape.

Arthur transitioned.

The collar choke came again.

This time Garrett knew he was trapped.

He tried to fight it.

His arms shook.

His lungs burned.

His vision blurred.

Arthur's pressure remained controlled.

“Tap.”

Garrett refused.

“Garrett.”

The old man's voice was calm.

“You don't prove anything by passing out.”

Garrett's fingers trembled.

He could hear his heartbeat.

Then darkness began creeping into his vision.

Finally, his hand struck the mat.

Once.

Twice.

Arthur released immediately.

Garrett rolled onto his side.
