As the Marine stood to his full height, towering over the humiliated officer, the dark olive-green fabric of his coat caught the light, the medals on his chest gleaming with unblemished honor. Vance stepped back, head bowed, entirely broken under the weight of the midnight navy blue.

Vance reached a trembling hand to his tactical belt, retrieving a pair of heavy shears. His fingers shook so violently he could barely align the blades. With a sharp, definitive snap, the thick plastic zip-ties binding the Marine’s wrists were severed. That single, sharp sound echoed through the parking lot—the sound of an unearned authority officially breaking.

The Marine brought his arms forward. He did not rub his wrists, nor did he massage his shoulders to show pain. He simply rolled his broad shoulders once, the dark olive-green fabric of his coat settling perfectly back into place, the gold medals realigning over his chest. He adjusted his cuffs with a meticulous, chilling calm, completely ignoring the trembling man in khaki beside him.

Chief Patterson stepped directly into the space between them. She did not raise her voice, but the absolute finality in her tone left zero room for negotiation. She held out her gloved hand, palm up.

"Your badge and your weapon, Vance," Patterson ordered, her midnight navy uniform projecting an impenetrable wall of federal authority. "You are relieved of duty, effective immediately, pending a full internal investigation."

Vance looked completely hollowed out. The faded, dusty khaki of his uniform seemed to hang off his frame like a deflated balloon. The aggressive hooligan from five minutes ago was gone, replaced by a broken, terrified man. With agonizing slowness, he unpinned the silver star from his chest, placing it onto the Chief’s outstretched palm, followed by the heavy thud of his duty belt hitting the asphalt.
