"Who?"

"Arthur."

Marcus sighed.

"You already lost."

"One round."

"You were never close."

Julian stared at him.

"Then help me."

Marcus refused.

That night, Julian waited until the gym was nearly empty.

He found Arthur cleaning the hallway.

"You."

Arthur looked up.

"Yes?"

"I want another match."

"No."

Julian stepped closer.

"Why?"

"Because you haven't learned anything."

Julian's face hardened.

"You think you're better than me."

"No."

"Then fight me."

Arthur shook his head.

"You don't want a fight."

"What do I want?"

"You want revenge."

Julian froze.

Arthur continued cleaning.

"Those are not the same thing."

Julian stared at him.

Then he noticed something on Arthur's wrist.

A faded scar.

Long.

Thin.

Old.

Julian suddenly wondered what kind of life could leave a man with scars like that.

For the first time, curiosity replaced anger.

"Who were you?"

Arthur stopped.

He looked at Julian.

"A man who made mistakes."

Then he walked away.

The Night Everything Changed

The charity event arrived three weeks later.

The gym was transformed.

Lights hung above the cage.

Cameras filled the corners.

Sponsors occupied the front rows.

Apex Striking had invited several prominent guests.

Julian entered the arena to loud applause.

He looked confident again.

His opponent was Daniel Cross, a professional fighter with fifteen wins.

Julian's father sat in the front row.

Marcus stood near the cage.

Arthur was working in the background.

Cleaning.

Invisible again.

The bell rang.

Julian fought differently this time.

He was disciplined.

Patient.

He followed the plan.

For two rounds, the fight was close.

In the third, Julian landed a clean combination.

The crowd erupted.

His father stood.

Julian smiled.

But Daniel was experienced.

He waited.

Then countered.

Julian fell.

He tried to stand.

Daniel attacked.

The referee stepped between them.

The fight was over.

Julian had lost.

Again.

He remained on the canvas.

The cameras were still filming.

The crowd became quiet.

Julian's father turned away.

Marcus looked disappointed.

Arthur watched from the edge of the gym.

Julian suddenly remembered the words Arthur had spoken.

You don't want a fight.

You want revenge.

For the first time, Julian understood.

He had spent his entire life trying to prove that nobody could look down on him.

And now the entire gym had watched him fail.

He walked backstage.

His hands were shaking.

Arthur followed a few minutes later to clean the blood from the entrance area.

Julian was sitting alone.

Arthur stopped.

"Are you hurt?"

Julian laughed bitterly.

"My pride."

Arthur nodded.

"That usually hurts longer."

Julian looked at him.

"Why did you never tell me?"

"Tell you what?"

"That you could fight."

Arthur considered the question.

"Would it have changed how you treated me?"

Julian looked down.

"No."

Arthur nodded.

"Then there was no reason."

Julian was silent.

After a while, he asked:

"Why did you let me hit the floor that day?"

Arthur smiled faintly.

"Because you needed to feel it."

Julian looked up.

"What?"

"The difference between being strong and needing everyone to believe you're strong."

Those words stayed with Julian.

Then something unexpected happened.

A man entered the hallway.

He was one of the event's sponsors.

He had been drinking.

He was angry about losing money on Julian's fight.

He grabbed Julian by the collar.

"You embarrassed us."

Julian tried to pull away.

The man shoved him into the wall.

Arthur stepped forward.

"Let him go."

The sponsor turned.

"Who are you?"

Arthur said nothing.

The man laughed.

"Get back to your mop."

Then he shoved Arthur.

This time Arthur did not move backward.

He caught the man's wrist.

The sponsor froze.

Arthur's voice was calm.

"Walk away."

The man tried to pull free.

He couldn't.

Arthur released him.

"Now."

The man stumbled backward.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus appeared.

He had seen enough.

"Arthur."

Arthur looked at him.

Marcus nodded toward the office.

"We need to talk."

This time Arthur did not refuse.

The Man Behind the Mop

The truth came out slowly.

Arthur had once been an instructor.

Not in a commercial gym.
