"Who made the report?" Damon asked.

"You don't need that information."

"Did the caller describe a specific crime?"

Caldwell's jaw tightened. "I'm conducting an investigation."

Damon looked past the officer toward the parked patrol car. "No one was using the

radio when you arrived. In fact, it's been silent for the last twenty minutes."

The officer stared at him, genuinely caught off guard. "You've been watching me?"

"We notice our surroundings," Damon said simply.

"That sounds like an admission," Caldwell sneered.

"Of what?" Damon countered.

Caldwell stepped half a pace closer, crowding their physical space in an intimidation

tactic taught at the academy but meant for actual suspects. "Open the bag."

"No," Damon said.

The answer was calm, immediate, and final.

Caldwell blinked, stunned by the direct refusal. "Excuse me?"

"You do not have our consent to search it."

The officer's face flushed deep red. Nearby, the woman with the stroller stopped

completely. Another bystander, a young woman in a baseball cap, raised her smartphone

and began recording the interaction.

Kelvin noticed the blinking red light on Caldwell's body camera. He reached up and

subtly brushed his hand against the small device hidden beneath his hoodie, ensuring it

was actively recording as well.

Caldwell looked toward the duffel again, his paranoia peaking. "What are you hiding?"

"Nothing," Kelvin said.

"Then open it."

"That is not how the Fourth Amendment works, Officer," Kelvin stated softly.

Caldwell gave a short, humorless, and cruel laugh. "You two think you're lawyers?"

"No," Damon answered, his eyes locking onto Caldwell's. "We think you need a lawful

reason."

The officer's hand moved away from his belt buckle and dropped directly onto the

bright yellow Taser resting in its holster. The distinctive sound of the holster snap echoed

in the quiet park.

Several people standing behind the bench suddenly became very quiet. The

atmosphere shifted from a tense argument to a potentially lethal confrontation in a matter

of seconds.

Caldwell ripped the Taser free and aimed the dual prongs directly at Damon's chest. A

red laser dot appeared on the dark fabric of Damon's hoodie.

A mother near the playground shrieked and pulled her child closer behind a slide.

The young woman holding the phone whispered, "Oh my God," her hands shaking as she

continued to film.

Damon did not flinch. He did not move abruptly. His hands remained open and

resting loosely on his knees.

"Officer Caldwell," Damon said, intentionally reading the nameplate pinned to the

man's chest. "Put the Taser away."
