Damon straightened up fully, towering slightly over the young cop. "Read the badge

before you pull that trigger, son."

Caldwell's mouth opened, but his vocal cords refused to work. No words came out.

Kelvin remained seated for another moment, studying the absolute terror dawning on

the officer's face. Then he stood calmly beside his partner. Caldwell swallowed hard and

slowly lowered the Taser toward the grass.

"You're... you're federal agents?" he stammered.

"Yes," Damon said.

"Why didn't you just say that?"

Kelvin looked past the officer toward the diverse crowd of onlookers. "Why should it

have mattered, Caldwell? Our rights apply regardless of our employment."

As Caldwell struggled to breathe, Kelvin's eyes darted toward the far end of the

parking lot. A sleek black sedan, which had been idling quietly for the past ten minutes,

suddenly revved its engine. The driver had seen the flashing lights, the drawn weapon,

and the commotion. He abruptly threw the car into reverse.

"There," Kelvin barked, pointing.

The vehicle tires screeched as it accelerated toward the north exit.

Chapter 10: The Takedown

Damon didn't hesitate. He lifted his left wrist, speaking rapidly into the microphone

hidden meticulously beneath his sleeve. "Target is moving. Black sedan, burning the north

exit. Go, go, go."

In an instant, the illusion of a quiet park shattered. Two heavily tinted, unmarked

SUVs roared to life from opposite street corners where they had been perfectly

camouflaged among parked civilian cars. They surged into the lot from opposite

directions, executing a flawless pincer maneuver. They slammed their bumpers together

just inches from the sedan's hood, completely blocking its escape route.

A dozen federal agents in tactical gear poured out of the SUVs with sidearms drawn,

shouting clear, overlapping commands.

The driver of the sedan threw his hands up through the open window, surrendering

without a fight.

Back at the bench, Caldwell stood motionless, completely paralyzed. The open set of

handcuffs still dangled loosely from his trembling left hand.

Kelvin turned his attention back to the rookie cop. "You arrived exactly thirty seconds

before the exchange was supposed to happen."

Caldwell looked dizzy. "What... what exchange?"

"The entire reason we were sitting here," Kelvin said, his voice laced with heavy

disappointment.

Damon reached down and finally unzipped the black duffel bag. Inside were neatly

stacked bundles of heavily documented, controlled evidence—flash drives, ledger copies,

and marked currency meant for the high-level informant sitting inside that blocked sedan.
