She only knew she needed to know whether someone was waiting.

A minute later, Sam returned.

"Blue pickup's empty."

"License plate?"

"I couldn't see it."

"Did you see anybody else?"

"There's a black SUV across the road."

Carol's stomach tightened.

"How long has it been there?"

"Couldn't tell."

She nodded.

Then she heard a chair scrape against the floor.

Frank stood.

Maya looked up.

"It's time."

"No," she whispered.

Frank's face didn't change.

"Don't make this difficult."

Roy stood as well.

Carol watched Maya reach into the pocket of her hoodie.

For one second, she thought the girl might pull out a phone.

Instead, Maya pulled out a small receipt.

She dropped it.

Frank bent down to pick it up.

Maya looked at Carol.

This time, there was no confusion in her eyes.

There was a question.

A desperate one.

Can you help me?

Carol's answer came before she could think.

"Sir?"

Frank turned.

"Yeah?"

"You've got something on your jacket."

He looked down.

"What?"

"Right shoulder."

Frank twisted.

There was nothing there.

Carol smiled apologetically.

"Sorry. Must have been a shadow."

Frank stared at her.

For a moment, the entire diner seemed to become silent.

Then he smiled.

But there was nothing friendly in it.

"You're very observant."

"Comes with the job."

"Maybe you should mind your own business."

Carol held his gaze.

"Maybe."

He put the receipt into his pocket.

"Let's go."

Maya stood.

Carol noticed that she was trembling.

Roy moved toward the door first.

Frank followed.

Maya came last.

As she passed the counter, she dropped something.

It landed softly on the floor.

Carol waited until the door closed.

Then she bent down.

A small metal key lay beneath the edge of the counter.

Carol picked it up.

There was a number written on a piece of tape.

She looked through the window.

Frank and Roy were walking toward a dark SUV.

Maya stopped.

She turned.

Their eyes met through the glass.

Carol closed her hand around the key.

Then she did something that would change all three of their lives.

She walked toward the front door.

"Carol!" Sam called.

She ignored him.

She stepped outside.

Cold rain struck her face.

Frank turned.

"What are you doing?"

Carol pointed toward the road.

"Your girl left her key."

Frank's expression changed.

"Give it to me."

Carol held it up.

"She dropped it inside."

"Give it to me."

Carol looked at Maya.

The girl was standing between the two men.

Waiting.

Carol took one step closer.

Then another.

And quietly, so only Maya could hear, she said, "Run."

Maya froze.

Frank looked between them.

"What did you say?"

Carol smiled.

"I said the rain's getting worse."

Then the lights of a patrol car appeared at the end of the road.

Frank's face went pale.

Roy swore.

Maya ran.

She didn't run toward the parking lot.

She ran toward Carol.

Frank lunged after her.

Carol stepped directly into his path.

He stopped.

For half a second, neither of them moved.

Then a police cruiser pulled into the diner lot.

The passenger door opened.

Officer Daniel Reyes stepped out.

"What's going on?"

Frank immediately raised his hands.

"Nothing."

Carol looked at Maya.

The young woman was standing behind her.

Shaking.

Soaking wet.

But free.

Officer Reyes looked at Frank.

Then Roy.

Then Maya.

He understood that the word nothing meant something.

"Everyone inside," he said.

Nobody moved.

"Now."

Frank's eyes stayed on Carol.

She could feel his anger like heat against her skin.

"You have no idea what you've done," he said quietly.

Carol didn't answer.

She had heard those words before.

Fifteen years ago, another man had said almost exactly the same thing.

She had believed him then.

She didn't anymore.

Inside Hollow Creek, Officer Reyes separated them.

Maya sat in a booth near the kitchen.

Frank and Roy were taken to opposite sides of the diner.

Reyes spoke first to Carol.

"Tell me everything."

Carol did.

Every detail.

The order.

The way Frank answered for Maya.

The hand on the table.

The strange behavior.

The key.
