Someone who knew how to erase trails.

The investigation widened.

By Sunday evening, federal agents had become involved.

Maya was moved to a safe location.

Carol returned to work.

Hollow Creek looked exactly the same.

That was the strange part.

The neon sign still buzzed.

The coffee machine still leaked.

Sam still complained about the grill.

Customers still argued about football.

A truck driver still ordered pancakes at midnight.

But Carol couldn't stop looking through the front window.

Every dark vehicle seemed suspicious.

Every person who entered made her wonder.

She knew now that ordinary places could be watched.

She also knew that fear could become a habit.

On Monday night, the bell above the door rang at 9:03.

Carol looked up.

A man walked inside.

Gray coat.

Black hat.

Forty, maybe fifty.

He sat at Table Seven.

"Coffee."

Carol brought it.

He smiled.

"You're Carol Whitfield."

Her hand tightened around the pot.

"Yes."

"I heard you're the woman who helped the girl."

Carol said nothing.

The man lifted the cup.

"Good people are rare."

"Who are you?"

He smiled.

"Nobody important."

He placed a twenty-dollar bill on the table.

Then he stood.

As he walked toward the door, Carol saw something in his hand.

A small photograph.

He dropped it beside the cash.

The door closed.

Carol picked up the photograph.

Her breath stopped.

It was Emily.

Her daughter.

Standing outside her apartment.

Taken three days earlier.

Carol's knees nearly gave out.

Sam saw her face.

"What happened?"

She couldn't answer.

The man was gone.

The police were called again.

This time, Carol didn't hesitate.

Reyes arrived within minutes.

He looked at the photograph.

Then at Carol.

"Do you have security cameras?"

"Outside."

"How long do you keep recordings?"

"Two weeks."

They pulled the footage.

The man had entered from the south.

He had parked two blocks away.

He had never looked directly at the cameras.

He knew exactly where they were.

Reyes watched the footage three times.

Then he said something that made Carol's blood run cold.

"He wanted you to see him."

"Why?"

"Because he could have left the photograph without ever coming inside."

Carol stared at the screen.

"Then why come here?"

"To tell you that he knows where to find you."

Carol sat down.

For the first time since Maya had walked into Hollow Creek, she felt genuinely afraid.

Not for herself.

For Emily.

The next morning, Emily came to the diner.

Carol hugged her before she could even speak.

"Mom?"

"I'm fine."

"You don't look fine."

"I'm fine."

Emily stepped back.

"What's happening?"

Carol looked at her daughter.

She wanted to tell her everything.

Instead, she said, "Someone threatened me."

Emily's face hardened.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"You should have told me."

"I wanted to protect you."

"By keeping me in the dark?"

Carol looked away.

Emily took her hand.

"Mom."

Carol looked up.

"I'm not a child."

"I know."

"Then let me stand beside you."

Those words broke something open inside Carol.

For fifteen years, she had built her life around protecting Emily.

But perhaps protection wasn't always keeping someone away from danger.

Sometimes it was trusting them enough to face it with you.

They went together to the police station.

Emily gave a statement.

Investigators reviewed the photograph.

Then they discovered something unexpected.

The image had been taken by a camera attached to a convenience store across from Emily's apartment.

The camera had captured the man's vehicle.

A black sedan.

The same vehicle had appeared near Hollow Creek.

And the same vehicle had been spotted near the storage facility.

A search of registration records led them to a company.

The company appeared legitimate.

Logistics.

Transportation.

Warehousing.

Its owner was a man named Vincent Hale.

Carol knew the name.

She had seen it before.

On a photograph.

In Frank's notebook.

Under the heading: "V."

The investigation accelerated.

Agents raided the warehouse two days later.

They found records.

Phones.

Hard drives.

Vehicles.

And a locked office.

Inside was a wall covered with photographs.

Victims.

Drivers.

Hotels.

Restaurants.

Bus stations.

And Hollow Creek Diner.

At the center was one photograph.

Carol.
