Carol's eyes flicked to the small wooden chalkboard near the entrance, where the daily specials were written in faded white chalk. Beside it hung the diner's emergency flashlight, heavy and metallic. It wasn't much of a weapon, but it offered a sense of weight. She pushed the thought aside—violence wasn't the answer here; distraction was.At 7:54, Frank pushed his plate forward slightly, the ceramic scraping harshly against the laminate. "Finish your food," he growled low to Maya.Maya didn't move for a second, then slowly reached out a trembling hand toward the crust of the untouched turkey sandwich. Her fingers shook so violently she could barely hold it."I said eat," Frank repeated, his tone dropping an octave, carrying an unmistakable threat.Carol stepped out from behind the counter, holding the coffee pot once more as an excuse to traverse the floor. She walked past Table Two, where an elderly couple was quietly sharing a slice of apple pie, oblivious to the tension radiating from the corner of the room. She approached Table Four from behind Roy's side, keeping her movements measured and deliberate."Everything tasting alright over here?" Carol asked, her voice light and cheerful, a stark contrast to the thick air surrounding the booth.Frank didn't look up, his gaze fixed on his phone. "It's fine. We're about ready for the check.""Of course," Carol said smoothly, stepping slightly closer to Maya's side of the table under the guise of setting down a small stack of fresh napkins. As she placed the napkins on the table, she intentionally let her fingers brush against Maya's hand—a quick, firm touch designed to signal reassurance.Maya flinched slightly, then lifted her eyes just enough to meet Carol's again. In that tiny fragment of time, Carol gave a slow, deliberate nod—a silent message that said I see you, and I am not going to let this happen.Frank's eyes snapped up from his phone, catching the lingering moment between them. "Is there a problem?" he asked, his dark eyes locking onto Carol with cold suspicion."Not at all, sir," Carol replied without flinching, keeping her posture open and professional. "Just making sure you have everything you need before you head out into that terrible weather. Route 89 is a mess tonight."Roy turned his head slightly, his sharp eyes narrowing as he evaluated Carol. "We can handle the roads," he said, his voice dry and raspy. "Just bring the check.""Right away," Carol said, stepping back slowly. As she walked back toward the register, her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She had reached the register, her fingers hovering over the keys, when the front bell chimed loudly, shattering the tense atmosphere of the room. The front door swung open, bringing with it a sudden gust of wet, freezing wind and the loud roar of the storm outside. A tall man wearing a dark oilskin jacket stepped inside, pulling off a dripping wide-brimmed hat. He stamped his muddy boots against the entrance mat, shaking the water from his coat.It was Sheriff Deputy Thomas Vance, a regular who often stopped by for a quick cup of dark coffee during his late-night patrols along the highway.Carol felt a surge of intense relief, but she immediately suppressed it, knowing that any sudden change in her demeanor could alert Frank and Roy. She watched out of the corner of her eye as Frank's entire body went rigid at the sight of the uniform. Roy silently shifted his right hand under the edge of the table, his eyes locking onto the deputy with intense, predatory focus.Deputy Vance smiled warmly at Carol as he wiped his face with a sleeve. "Evening, Carol. Heavy one out there tonight.""Sure is, Tom," Carol said, keeping her tone completely even as he walked toward the counter. "Grab a seat at the bar, I'll bring you your usual."Vance nodded and took a stool near the end of the counter, just a few yards away from Table Four. As he settled in, his eyes naturally swept the small room, noticing the tense posture of the two men and the pale, trembling girl sandwiched between them.Frank immediately slid his phone into his pocket and placed his hands flat on the table, trying to look relaxed, but the sudden stiffness in his shoulders was impossible to hide from someone trained to look for trouble.Carol walked over to Vance with a fresh mug, pouring the hot coffee as he leaned in slightly."Everything alright tonight, Carol?" Vance asked softly, his voice barely audible under the sound of the rain outside. "You look a little tense."Carol leaned over the counter, pretending to wipe down the surface right in front of him. She didn't look toward Table Four, keeping her eyes fixed on Vance's badge. "Table Four," she whispered rapidly, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts. "The girl in the middle. She's in deep trouble, Tom. Those men aren't letting her speak, and she's terrified. They're leaving in less than five minutes."
