Vance's eyes flicked subtly toward the reflection in the dark glass window beside him, observing the layout of Table Four without turning his head directly. He saw Roy's hand hidden beneath the table line and Frank's rigid, watchful posture."Stay calm, Carol," Vance said quietly, taking a slow sip of his coffee to keep up appearances. "I'm going to walk over there and ask for their IDs. If they move wrong, I want you to step behind the kitchen door immediately.""Tom, be careful," Carol murmured, her knuckles white around the handle of the coffee pot. "I think the thin one has a gun."Vance gave a barely visible nod, his expression shifting from casual local law enforcement to sharp, focused readiness. He set his cup down without making a sound and rested his hand lightly near his belt holster. At Table Four, Frank saw the unspoken exchange between the deputy and the waitress. He recognized the subtle shift in the air, the way the room had suddenly become entirely still despite the roaring storm outside."We're leaving now," Frank said abruptly, sliding out of the booth and reaching down to grab Maya forcibly by her upper arm."Hey! Hold on a second, folks," Vance said, stepping away from the counter and raising a hand, his voice calm but authoritative as he moved into the aisle. "Where's the rush? I just need to ask you a few quick questions before you hit the highway."Roy stood up instantly, his body blocking Vance's line of sight to Frank and Maya. His hidden hand moved beneath his jacket with terrifying speed. "We don't have anything to say to you, officer.""Keep your hands where I can see them!" Vance snapped, his voice booming through the diner, shattering the quiet atmosphere into absolute chaos. The elderly couple at Table Two gasped, scrambling backward into their seats as the danger became instantly clear.Frank yanked Maya out of the booth, using her frail body as a human shield as he pulled a heavy black pistol from his waistband, pressing the barrel against her side. Maya let out a terrified cry, her eyes wide with shock as she was pulled violently against him."Back off!" Frank roared, his face contorted in anger and panic. "Back off or I swear to God I'll end her right here!"Vance pulled his sidearm, keeping it pointed squarely at Frank, but the position of the girl made a clear shot completely impossible. "Put the weapon down, Frank! You're not getting out of here!""Shoot him, Roy!" Frank yelled, his grip tightening around Maya's arm so hard she gasped in pain.Roy pulled his own gun, but before he could raise it toward Vance, Carol acted purely on instinct, fueled by the terrifying memory of her own past and an overwhelming drive to protect the helpless girl standing before her.She swung the heavy glass coffee pot with all her strength, slamming it hard against the back of Roy's head. The thick glass shattered on impact, showering hot liquid and sharp shards across the aisle. Roy let out a sharp cry of pain and confusion, stumbling forward onto his knees as the weapon flew from his grip, clattering loudly across the linoleum floor toward the kitchen counter."Sam! The gun!" Carol shouted, stumbling back from the impact.Sam burst through the kitchen doors holding his heavy metal grill scraper, instantly stomping his boot down on Roy's loose firearm and kicking it far behind the counter out of reach. The sudden distraction broke Frank's focus for a fraction of a second. Vance seized the moment, taking a fast step forward and lunging over the table edge, grabbing Frank's gun hand and forcing the barrel upward toward the ceiling.A loud shot echoed through the diner—BANG—shattering one of the high glass windows near the roof, letting in a sudden spray of rain and wind.Maya twisted violently, pulling away from Frank's grip as Carol reached out and yanked the girl toward her, pulling her behind the heavy wooden register counter and shielding her with her own body."I got you! I got you, you're safe!" Carol cried, holding Maya tight against her chest as the girl sobbed hysterically into her apron. On the floor, Vance wrestled Frank to the ground, slamming his wrist against the hard floor until the pistol dropped from his fingers. Vance quickly drove his knee into Frank's back, pulling the man's arms behind him and clicking the heavy steel handcuffs into place with two loud, decisive snaps.
