The officer retrieved the safe, inputted the code, and pulled out the thick stack of legal documents. He scanned the first page, then the second. He looked up, his gaze hardening as he stared at Vivian.

“Ma'am,” the officer said coldly to my mother-in-law. “According to the deed and the state registry, this property belongs exclusively to the victim. You have exactly five minutes to pack a bag and vacate the premises, or you will be arrested for trespassing.”

Vivian’s jaw dropped. The world she had built on my dime was collapsing.

The other officer grabbed Daniel by the arm, spinning him around and slamming him against the wall. The beautiful, metallic click of handcuffs echoing in the hallway was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.

“Daniel Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated domestic battery,” the officer recited.
